Parenting after 35

M.Amy

I seem to remember you having a mother's helper. Or was it a nanny?

I ask because DH and I are finally coming to an understanding about TTC#2, thinking we'll try in a year, and I'd like some help for a few hours a day if we have another one.

I googled it, but all the quotes I seem to get are for nannies who prefer 400-500 bucks a week. No way I'm paying that for someone to pick up M from pre-school and hang out with us when we're at the park.

Should I just get a neighborhood kid? I'd really like someone older, bonded and experienced, but I get that they may not be interested in working so few hours.

Make any sense? Help!

  • Congrats about TTC in a year!!

We have both.  We have a full-time nanny who watches Matt while DH and I are at work.  Then we have a mother's helper for a few hours over the weekend to give DH and I some time to get stuff done around the house.

The mother's helper is a 13 year old girl who we pay $5 an hour. She can take Matt to the park (which is a block from us) but we are at home while she watches him.  I consider her a babysitter in training but right now would not let her watch Matt while we were not at home until she is older.  It is a perfect situation.  She gets experience and spending money while we get Matt entertained for a couple of hours.

Do you have a college nearby?  Around here it is really common to have college students watch kids (we have one as a babysitter) but they will probably be around $10-15 an hr unless you get lucky.

Another thing you could try is a nanny share.

Congrats about TTC in a year!! Thanks! I responded pretty well to my initial treatment so we were kind of inspired to TTC now, but it would be really tough having a 2 year old M and a newborn so we've settled on me continuing treatment for a year then TTC... when I'm 38.Yoiks!
