car seat while traveling??

how do you travel with your infants when it comes to needing a car seat in a foreign country??  DH and i are wondering how this works, and how/what we need to do when we're in mexico...we don't rent a car, but do take taxi's often.

i guess i've never seen a car seat making it's way onto an airplane, but i'm just not sure!

Re: car seat while traveling??

  • My sister checked her car seat bc my nephew is small enough that he didn't need his own seat yet.

  • When I was looking into prices to go home to Canada (on priceline) it told me that since it is an international flight your LO needs his/her own seat. In domestic flights you can get away with having baby on your lap. I think that you can bring your car seat onto the plane with you (good to have baby strapped in in case of any turbulance).  I have seen many people check their car seats at the gate as well.  If you call the airline you plan on flying with I am sure that they can verify for you, and if you book through a travel agent they should be able to answer questions about car seats in taxi's.
  • I know in NYC, if you're traveling in a cab, LO does not need a car seat. It's pretty much the only time here. Often people take their car seats with them to where ever they are traveling to, but you can check the Mexican laws regarding car seats... from what I remember, I don't think they require one!
  • Like PP said, I don't think you need a car seat for taxis. However, I think that's right about international flights and baby needing it's own seat. Car seats work great on planes and the flight attendants should know how to strap your seat into the airplane seat. I know with my car seat there is a page in the instructions about airplanes.

  • We just flew with DS a few weeks ago and we bought him a ticket - I hate being cramped next to families(just a personal pet peeve of mine).  We had intended to use his carseat on the plane, however, were told(once we were seated) that he would have to be in the window seat and that made it a tight fit for DH and I.  We ended up gate-checking it each way, but having his own seat was fantastic, he laid out on the seat in between us both ways and we didn't hear a peep - it's the only way we'll travel.
