So, tell me about toddler sizes.

So should I really expect for Holly (who will be 2 tomorrow! Crying), currently in a 24mos-2T to not move up into a 3T for the better part of a year? She's pretty much been wearing sizes that correspond with her age up until this point.

I guess I'm so used to her changing sizes every 3-6 mos, that it's hard for me to imagine her staying in the same size for so long. I know they stop growing as fast (or mostly just grow taller) after 2, but I wasn't sure. Consignment sale season is coming up, and I want to plan for spring/summer/early fall.

Re: So, tell me about toddler sizes.

  • I already bought a lot of things last year on clearance in 2T.  She wears 2T shirts now.  She's still in 24 month pants.  I have a 3T shirt at home I am going to try on her to see how it fits.  When I buy any spring/summer things now, I am going to get 3T shirts and 2T pants. Some of her 2T shirts fit well now, so I am going to buy 3T (if the shirt we try on isn't too huge).  I have 2T pajamas for the spring/summer.  3T for next fall/winter.

That sounds like a good plan. That's exactly what Holly mostly wears--2T shirts & 24 mo pants.

  • I'm confused about this too. Maddie is in mostly 2T stuff now, although she still wears some 18m stuff. The 2T stuff definitely isn't huge on her, so I'm wondering if I should still buy it for spring/summer clothes?? 3T seems like a such a huge jump, and like Holly, she has been wearing the size for her age for a while now. Why isn't there a 2.5T, lol?

  • Caleb has been wearing about 1 age up in size. He is currently in 24 months, & I know that size won't last too long! I'm planning on buying 3t for the spring & summer. I am assuming some of those pieces will last into the fall.

  • Eli was still growing pretty fast at first, but I think he was still catching up, because he's always been behind a size and just now he's wearing age appropriate sizes.  He wore 2T for most of the year last year, like Spring through Fall I guess.  For winter he's in 3T, and I've told people to get him 4T for summer clothes.  So yeah, I'm not sure.  Maybe he'll still be in 4T next winter or maybe 5, but that would make him a size ahead so it's hard to say.

He's always been so tall and skinny anyway clothes are hard for us regardless, so I rarely shop ahead for more than a season.  Shoot, the fall clothes I got him back in October are already getting too small.

  • My girls are 4 and wearing 6 on top and 5 on bottom.  Jeremiah is 2 and wearing 3T.  We have yet to make it through a whole season without changing sizes, so I can't imagine going an entire year in the same size.  But I have tall children.  I think the girls could still wear 4 around the waist, but the shirts are too short and the pants are above the ankles.

  • Natalie has been wearing 2T since around her birthday.  Depending on the brand, 2T in pants is starting to get a little short but for the most part, she's been wearing 2T for over 7 months.  I expect her spring/summer clothes will need to be 3T but that would mean she's will have gone roughly 1 year in the same size.

  • Keep in mind that if the length is an issue now in bottoms, it won't be an issue for summer. I made that mistake last year and all of J's shorts were so LONG (even though he's plenty tall) and the waist was sort of big (except for adjustable waist). By the end of the summer/early fall he had grown into the them though so it's sort of a catch-22 IMO.
  • I agree with BTP that with spring and summer clothes particularly shorts that length isn't an issue like this past summer Jack wore some of his shorts from the summer before because his waist is so small. But because of length we are finally in 24 mo/2t (i like the 2t more cuz they are slimmer to me then the 24 mo and waist is his bit issue) but I plan to get 2t for this summer because he just moved into 2t and most are still big without tightening the adjustable or using a belt. I'd go bigger on tops before bottoms for sure.

  • Also, I think they outgrow 24mo much quicker than 2T given how 24mo. clothes are cut compared to 2T.  I really doubt Holly will be in 3T by this summer if she's just now moving from 24 mo. to 2T.  They really seem to slow down in growth around 2 yr. old.  I was expecting to have to move Natalie to 3T around now but they still swallow her, and she had started out in 24 mo./2T before her 2nd birthday.

This is AT to a T.

He has worn 18m pants all winter...they are a little short when he sits but other than its fine. Esp when hes wearing them to school. CP ive bought 24m jeans and they are still too long and big in the waist. Kohls I can buy 2T and roll them up at the waist band for height. Target & ON the same. But Im all about the adjustable waistband...and I bought shorts last year with the adjustable band and he can prob wear those this year too. As for shirts it 2T pretty much all the time now. So Ill prob move up in shirts but not bottoms.

  • Anyone else with a tall child? Zoe is super tall (>95%). She's been in 2T for a few months. Our problem is the 2T pants are long enough but loose in the waist. I use Dapper Snappers and try to find pants with adjustable waists. This winter I've mostly had her in dresses and leggings, which fit better. Her feet just grew and she's in size 6. I'm looking forward to a stop in growth spurts!

  • bobsbride2006.....This is my girls problems.  The only thing I've really found to help is to buy the adjustable waists.  It is a bit easier now because they are in little girl sizes that come in regular and slim, so I can buy the next size up for the length and get the slim version.  But, they outgrow the slim before they need the next size in length, so I'm still having to buy more.  I thought the growth spurts would have cut back by now, but not in our house.

     Good luck!
