Feel like a bad mom...please help

This is DH's last week on vacation.  He goes back to work on Monday. He is home with DS and things are not going well.  DS does not want to nap.  But since he's not napping he gets so tired and cranky and doesn't want to be put down.  DH says we have babied him too much and now he won't/can't sleep on his own.  DH put him in his crib and tried letting him cry for a bit and see what happened.  20 min later he was still screaming.  DH has gotten very upset with me and basically blames this all on me.  He even said I should stop breastfeeding because it's causing problems.  I am so upset now and have no clue what to do.  Any words of encouragement are greatly appreciated.

  • DH is probably just frustrated and doesn't know what to do. Blaming you and BFing is silly. Also I am sure you have heard the saying that you "can't spoil a baby." From my understanding, that is a baby under 6 months. Your LO is now old enough to sleep train if you want to. There are lots of methods (Ferber, CIO, No cry Sleep Solution etc). What happens when your DH goes back to work? Where will your DS be during the day?

  • He is with my mom when DH goes back to work.  She also has problems getting him to sleep but never this bad.  She said she usually gives him a bottle and he falls asleep.

  • Well be happy that you only have to listen to DH complain for 2 more days! My mom watches DD one day a week while I work and she was having uses getting her to sleep as well until I finally convinced her to do ferber (which we had already done). Now DD finally naps for her as well and is much happier for me when I pick her up and my mom is happier to not a have a clingy, cranky baby attached to her hip all day.

  • I bought the Sleepeasy book and am trying to read it while I pump.  I plan on starting that tonight.  We don't really have issues at night but it should also help him with his naps.  That will give us 4 full days before he goes back.  I just need to make sure she continues what we start.

  • My DD hates naps too, and me and DH will take turns rocking and shushing and she will still stay up. I found that the most important thing is to try before she gets too tired.

Since we obviously suck at reading her cues, we basically had to watch the time and start trying her for a nap after an hour of awake time, try for 15-20 min, if we fail, we play with her, then try again in a little bit. Once we did this for a few days, we saw her own pattern emerging and were able to follow it to get her down for naps on the right times and it works well. It isn't foolproof, it does sometimes change, but it really has helped.
