suggest a breast pump....

... now that is a sentence I never thought I would say!  Anyone have any suggestions? I am a little overwhelmed with my choices!  Do I want electric or hand pump?  Madela, first years, ipump, avenda.......

Any help would be much appreciated!!!  thanks!

Re: suggest a breast pump....

  • If you're planning on doing any significant amount of pumping, you definitely want an electric pump!  And a double one at that!

I had the Lansinoh double electric pump.  It worked great, I pumped at least once or twice a day for almost a year and never had any problems with it.  I like that it's a closed system...there's not chance that the milk can back up into the tubing or get into the motor, which can happen with the Medela.

Medela's are very popular, but mine worked just fine and was cheaper.

  • I would go with electric.  I have the Lansinoh electric breast pump. It is very easy to clean and it works great.  Plus, the price is more than $100 less than the Madela.

  • You'll want a double electric if you plan to pump more than once in a rare while.  I have and really like the Ameda Purely Yours (which is actually the same as the Lansinoh double electric; it just comes with more stuff).  It's a great pump and cheaper than Medela (mostly because they don't spend on advertising).  As the pp said, it's also a closed system so you don't have to worry about milk in the tubes.
  • Ditto others - it depends on how much you plan to pump. I hope to EBF, but that doesn't always work out.

I don't want to spend a ton on a pump that I won't use, so I'm getting the Medela Harmony hand pump to start (it's $35), which I'll open, clean, and pack to bring to the hospital. If I find that I'll need to pump more because of latching problems or what have you, I plan to get the Lansinoh double electric that pp's mentioned.

If BFing works out for me and LO, I will end up getting the Lansinoh anyway for when I go back to work, but again, I don't want to buy it pre-baby and then find out that I can't BF at all for some reason or another.

  • If you have the money, will be pumping A LOT and need to behandsfree, get the Medela Freestyle ($380). It's truly badass.

If you need a workhorse pump for going back to work, get theMedela Pump In Style ~ it looks like a briefcase ($280).

If you're at at-home pumper, the Ameda Purely Yours ($160) willdo the trick. And of course, you'll want a simple hand pump for traveling andsuch ($35).

  • I registered for (and got in the mail yesterday) the miPump by The First Years.  It's not electric, but it's a double pump and it was cheap ($80.00).  This is our first, and I really didn't want anyone to spend the money on a more expensive one just in case the whole BF thing didn't work out.  Plus, once you open them you can't return them (that is the case here anyway), so getting a really expensive one was too much of a gamble for me.

Mines lasted through two kids already. I used one of the formula bags they give you at the hospital each time (it doesn't come with a handy bag but you get them at the hospital) and carried it to work and everything. I had a single Medela and it was really loud, the double is quick and pretty quiet - baby doesn't notice if you pump while feeding the other side.

  • I have the Avent Isis IQ double pump. I had the Medela Pump in Style and it didn't work as well for me. I like the pedal pads with the Avent. I work in a NICU and renting the Lactina is the best way to do it if you are going to be pumping a lot.
