TTC After a Loss

Chart Q- Temping as a "frequent waker"

Hi ladies! I have a question for the charting pros- How do you handle temping if you wake up frequently throughout the night? I tend to wake up often- sometimes every hour (I hate those nights) but almost always at least once during the night. I also cycle between dozing and awake for about an hour before the alarm goes off at 5, if not longer. I'm committed to charting but I don't know how to accurately temp if my sleep is so wacky.

The last three days my temps were: 97.78, 97.14, and 97.20. I have AF right now so I would think my temps wouldn't be so different normally- so I figured it's sleep that's throwing it off.  Any help would be very appreciated!

Re: Chart Q- Temping as a "frequent waker"

  • I have this problem too and it makes me very inconsistent. As such, I've implemented a new plan of attack (as of this morning). I set my phone for 3 AM and stick it under my pillow.  I figure that I typically can sleep a few solid hours once I finally fall asleep (I go to bed at 10), the alarm vibrates, wakes me and I take my temp.  The tough part is falling asleep again after I take the temp (I was up for two hours after my wake-up call this morning).  I don't know if this is a solid solution yet but I'd be interested in other replies as well.  GL!

  • I am in the same boat...I just temp at 5:30 regardless and mark sleep deprived, if I need to. I am rarely asleep for a full 3 hours at a time, unless I don't have work the next day...boo to anxiety.
  • My temps during AF are always all over the place, so I don't really think you can go by that.  As for waking up, I think as long as you aren't actually getting out of bed, you should be fine at taking it the same time each day.

  • My problem is that I have to be up and running at 5- and once I'm awake (i.e. alarm) I can NEVER go back to sleep. I've had really awful sleep since I was in college- though I'm a morning person not a night person. My doctor thinks it's stress related, but there's not much I can do about that. (I changed jobs 9 months ago to a "less stressful" job- which actually turned out to be as much stress, but I like it a lot more). Just once I want to sleep all the way through the night! I'll continue to temp when my alarm goes off, and before I get out of bed. I've been temping for a few weeks, but I just bought a four digit thermometer this weekend so hopefully I will have more accuracy. Thank you all for your help!!!

  • I have insomnia so I wake up almost every two hours and it's worse after 3am. I took my temp at 6am everyday and I was able to see a fairly consistent pattern after two months. My temps are still wild, but I can at least see a coverline and tell if I drop below it.

  • I sleep soundly until 2-3am. Then I'm up every half hour - 45 minutes until I actually wake up. I'm very consistent doing this, and as long as you are a consistently frequent waker you're good. This is as long as you are not getting up out of bed every time you wake. If you just wake and roll over and go back to sleep, you're good.

Your temps while you are on AF will always be wacky. It looks as though you have dramatic drop from CD1 to CD2, which is normal. Some people get them before AF shows, giving them fair warning that AF is coming. Others get them after. I had a dramatic temp drop too. The other two temps seem close enough together to not really worry about.

  • I usually wake up 3-4 times a night (including usually a half hour before I temp) and my temps still show a clear thermal shift every month.
