14 mo. and not walking...EI??

One dd started walking at 11 mo. and I assumed the other would follow soon thereafter...however...DDs are now 14 mo. and the one is still not walking.

She stands unassisted and sometimes takes 3-5 wobbly steps to get from one big object to another, but I'm starting to worry since the other DD is practically running?!

It's super tough trying to find a balance of such differing paces (one gallops ahead of me while I try to encourage other DD to take steps, etc.)--and what really breaks me is that 1 DD is now in the advanced toddler class and is enjoying a real variety of activities whereas other DD is still in the baby room (oldest in the class) and seems to be bored/ missing out on the developmental opps that her sister gets.

I try as much as poss. to practice walking with DD but other DD is a handful to watch and often gets jealous, tries to break up the process, and so it's hard doing one-on-one practice, kwim?

WWYD? Look into EI services through their pedi or just wait it out? Any tips on helping encouraging walking????

Thanks for listening!

  • I'd wait it out.  14m isn't that late.  It just seems late because people always talk or post about their little ones who are doing stuff early.  The people whose LOs are on time or late don't mention it, so it may seem like she's behind, but she really isn't.  I have to keep reminding myself the same thing!

  • One of my dd's starting walking at 14.5 months...they other didn't start until 17 months...is walking one of the criteria for the "advanced" room...I wouldn't have wanted my girls split up so young and if she is on target for all other develop milestones maybe they can move her up?  I wouldn't want my kid bored just b/c she wasn't walking yet...
  • Definitely nothing to panic about. My boys didn't walk til they were 15 months, and even that wasn't too noteworthy. I'd give it some time.

Yep, unfortunately, the req. at both the gym's care center and their Mother's Day Out Program at school is that your LO has to be walking before advancing to the next level. i.e.--they started in the Babies room (DD still there) and then other DD moved up to the (Advanced) Toddler room at the gym. I actually requested that this next week, they put both DDs in the Toddler room at their school program in hopes that DD who isn't walking will benefit from the others around her and both DDs can then stay together.

  • 18 months is considered normal for walking, so you've still got some time.

  • My b/g twins were born @ 32 weeks and they walked @ 15.5 mo.  Dr said they start to worry after 18 mo.

  • I'm not sure where your concern stems from this early on; has the pediatrician mentioned concerns about your LO's motor skills? Anywhere from 9 to 18m is within the normal range to start walking. Your DD is doing great! My boys were about 2 months apart in terms of when they hit their big milestones (crawling, standing, walking); they're two different people though so that's to be expected.

  • My one son did not walk until 19 months.  They moved him to the pre-toddler room around 17/18 months even though he was the only one not walking (on the advice of his PT thinking it might help encourage him)

It was sometimes a bit challenging for the teachers but they walked with him holding his hands.  I would talk to the director and see if it is possible to move your DD over anyway.

We were working with EI already since 10 months for other issues so they stayed with him until he walked.  I would not be worried about not walking yet at 14 months especially since she can stand unassisted.  I would see what your pedi says at your 15 month well visit.

  • At almost 16  months I have 2 running and 2 doing wobbly steps.  My pedi doesn't seem concerned yet so I am trying not to be either.

  • my boys are just taking their first steps, so i figure they will be actually walking by 16 mo. nothing to worry about at 14 mo.
  • Mine were just like this.  DD1 started at 10 months.  At 14 months DD2 was doing just what you described- taking 4/5 wobbly steps or walking while holding our fingers as her sister zoomed back and forth and ran circles around her.

After a week though- she can run right beside her sister!  Don't worry, they just develop at different rates sometimes :)  It's hard not to compare and worry.
