Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Anyone start rice cereal early?

Sorry for another cereal/solids question-seems to be a pattern today!  My LO will be 3 months on monday (so very young) but he is eating like a mad man.  He's a big baby-he was 95% for height and weight at his 2 month check up.

2 days ago it seemed the only thing he wanted to do was eat-it was to the point where he had a 7 ounce bottle and less than 2 hours later was screaming for more.  For the past 5 days he has been eating a lot more than normal and has started waking in the middle of the night to eat (previously he was STTN).  Did anyone start rice cereal early (not for reflux reasons)?  He is still so young so I'm nervous to start him on it.

  • Talk to your pedi.  There's no reason why you should be starting so early.  He's probably going through a growth spurt.

  • I agree, that is the 3 month growth spurt. DS's worst growth spurt was that one.
DS has acid relux and milk protein allergy, and had torticollis, used to EP, now we FF . April siggy 3-6 month

We never even noticed his other growth spurts but this one we have for sure!!  Our pedi talked to us at his 2 month about possibly needing to start solids early if he continues to grow at that rate. But I still feel like 3 months is early.

Since this is the first real growth spurt we've noticed I'm clueless on what we do.  Can we just continue feeidng him these massive amounts??  It doesn't seem to be making him constipated or anything and eating is the only thing that will calm him down.

  • As PP mentioned, there is a growth spurt at 12wks/3mos. To be honest it feels like it hasn't stopped for my DS. Sleep still hasn't recovered at all, and he seems insatiable. I'd wait a few more days to see if your LO's habits change, and then talk with pedi. We start rice/oatmeal last week per my pedi's urging-- DS's  on the young end of the spectrum and he's not taking to it too easily, and sleep still sucks, so there's no guarantee solids will change your LO's habits. Not the easiest aspect of parenting....

  • My pediatrician told me to start DS on cereal when I took him to his 2 month appt.  because he was drinking 40+oz. of formula a day and was not STTN. He said some babies are just hungrier then others.

I would call your pediatrician and ask if you can start a small amount of cereal (1 tbsn./ 8oz bottle) and see if it will help.

  • Does he sit unassisted?  My pedi personally does not recommend solids before 4 months.  I would consult your pedi about your concerns and see what they say.

Yes, feed him. As long as he is not spitting up or having an issue with eating. Hunter ate like 40 oz of BM a day for 3-4 days straight, he did sleep at night. And then he went back to normal eating after that. I called the pedi to ask if it was fine to feed him so much in a short period of time. They said if he is hungry feed him. I was feeding him a bottle every hour or so.

  • Well to be one of the unpopular replies.  I started my DD on Rice Cereal in her bottle when she was 3 months.  She had spit up issues, and I put 1 oz of rice in with her 4 oz formula bottle for her 1st and last bottles of the day.  this helped her spit up issue, and filled her tummy longer.  Our doctor approved this.  If it helps you LO - why not?  Just be sure to cut the nipples a little larger so he/she can suck it out.  She loves these bottles!  And she is fine on the weight scale.

PS. DS is OFF the charts for height and at 90% for weight and we are not starting solids and our pedi doesn't want us to until 4 months or so. He is in 9 month clothes.

  • At my son's 2 month appointment, my pedi said I could start spoon feeding him rice cereal at 3 months. We started a little over a week ago, and he is loving it. We are starting slow and working our way up. He gets an ounce of breastmilk mixed with 2 tablespoons of cereal in the morning and at night. I don't know if it's related, but he's been sleeping from about 10:30pm until about 6:30am for the past week.
  • This sounds like my DS. He's a very hungry baby.

I started spoonfeeding him oatmeal at 3 months. He was mostly a supported sitter at that point and would watch people eat like he knew what was going on. He did great with the oatmeal and loves it!
