Hospital bag

Did you take a suitcase or a bag? How much did you pack? What do you wish you would have packed for yourself or baby or DH that you forgot?? Monica posted a list of stuff a few months ago so I saved it just wondering if anyone else has any ideas!

Sorry, I'll be 27 weeks on Friday and I really want to start getting my bag together so that if Bryant decides to come early I am not scrambling.

Re: Hospital bag

  • I took a small suitcase just because it rolled.

Not sure what all Monica had on the list but I was grateful for

My Boppy, maternity lounge pants, lightweight robe, my own pillow, socks, a comfy outfit to go home in, cell phone charger, my own shower stuff

  • I took my small carry-on size suitcase for me and I brought DD's diaper bag packed with her things.

Here is what I remember taking off the top of my head:

    For me:
    my pillow
    2 gowns
    1 pair pajama pants
    house shoes
    socks
large underwear (don't take any you care to ruin...my hospital did not provide the mesh/disposable kind)
    sports bras
    nursing pads
    toiletries (shampoo, etc.)
    blow dryer
    camera charger
    phone charger
    laptop

I was induced, so I wore black maternity yoga pants and a white long-sleeve maternity shirt to the hospital.  I wore the same thing home.  That saved some packing...but if your water broke or something, you may not be able to do that.

    For baby:
    a couple of sleepers
    blanket (hospital picture)
    a couple of hats
outfit for picture & coming home
    socks
    pacifiers

That is all I can think of right now.  For the things I couldn't keep packed all the time, I just wrote a list and put it on top of the suitcase.  That way if I had to quickly pack the last minute things I wouldn't forget something.

    Allie ~ 01/26/09 ~ 7 lbs, 9 oz ~ 20.75 in. & Amelia ~ 03/16/11 ~ 8 lbs, 1 oz ~ 21 in.

  • If you are planning on nursing take Lansinoh cream and nursing bras/tanks. We packed the little guy's stuff in our bag but took his empty diaper bag to load up with what the hospital provided (wipes, diapers, mesh underwear, jumbo pads and cooling packs). Yes we asked for extras on everything because I continued to wear the underwear, pads and cooling packs once I got home).

  • Things I wanted after I got there:

    1) Burt's Bees Chapstick!  I don't know why my lips became so chapped in the hospital.

    2) Extra ponytail holders...

    3) Non-scented lotion for YOU (esp if you are going to be having skin-to-skin with baby)

    4) Change for drink/snack machine for visitors that come (they always asked!)

    5) Oh, and granny panties... After you're out of the mesh ones you'll be grateful. And when I say granny, I mean granny--take it from me that VSecret doesn't make them granny enough ;)

Good luck--I'm super glad I packed early!

Also, practice with your infant carseat--just a suggestion.

  • I packed pretty much what most of the others packed...my saving graces were my own comfy yoga pants and t'shirts, and my own nightgown and robes, granny panties(I bought like three sizes too big ones per Sarah's suggestion and I was really grateful for them since I ended up with a c-section), my laptop because we had some down time, we brought a couple of movies as well and watched them, two pillows for myself because the hospital ones just aren't that great, and my shower stuff because it made me feel more human and I had a lot of visitors so I didn't want to look like death warmed over.

I had a giant Vera Bradley duffel bag, then we also took another tote bag with the movies, camera charger, couple of magazines and books, and laptop stuff, and I brought the diaper bag with Aubrey's stuff which was just a couple of sleepers, her going home outfit, some mittens, two hats, and some newborn diapers since I had already been told HH uses the size 1 diapers.  I also brought an empty bag to load up on the stuff they put in her bassinet so we could take it home as well.

Oh and my boppy was a lifesaver as well.  And my mom brought us some snacks.

A little tip:  If you are delivering at HH, they keep cokes, juice, etc in this little room across from the nurses station on the 5th floor (which is the postpartum floor that you will be on unless it is full while you are there)...they are for the patients and their husbands...it was nice that that's all that Wes had to do was walk down there and get it.

  • I just double checked with Wes...he said the room across from the nurses station had juice, water, coffee, milk, and also depending on the time of day some snack food like crackers etc.  The nurses keep soda's behind the nurses desk but all you have to do is ask.

Oh and they'll deliver pizza directly to your room as well (we ordered from the nearest Domino's our last night since we had missed dinner because I thought I was getting discharged earlier that day and there was a miscommunication with Dr. Spangler releasing me).

  • Thanks! I will definately keep this in mind!
