Down there care... Brazillian?

Alright, Im not going to lie- I've always wanted to get a Brazillian, but have been too chicken to do it... Has anyone had it done and how bad is it really? Does it get better after the first one?!

Im thinking about getting one a few weeks before my duedate, but wasn't sure if it'd be worse because of your skin being more sensitive? You could get one when your PG, right? I dont see why not...And then I think to myself, before I have baby would probably be the BEST time to get one... it couldn't compare to labor, could it?!

Im just curious ladies, whos had one and how'd it go?

Re: Down there care... Brazillian?

  • You CAN get it done while pg, but it's gonna hurt like hell.

Even with the most experienced technician on the best of days, it's not a walk in the park. With the swelling and sensitivity you have going on while pg, it's going to be even worse.

If it's something you think you're going to want for yourself as far as ease of episiotomy and cleanup after the birth, I would recommend starting now, and going for just a bikini wax at first, working your way up to a full brazillian.

It DOES get easier to bear as you get used to it, and the hair grows back finer, which is why it's also a good idea to start sooner.

If you do go for it, make sure you scope out a well-recommended facility that does them regularly. You don't need to pick the most expensive place, but do NOT pick the cheapest place. Usually a reputable spa will have someone experienced. When calling around, let them know you're pg, so that they can refuse you if they want to, rather than getting there and being turned away.

As well, ask if they use disposable, one-time use equipment (spatulas, cloths strips) and how/how often they clean the tweezers used for finishing touches. You do NOT want a place that uses plastic spatulas and "cleans" them between uses. There is nothing you can do that will 100% clean plastic.

Personally, I've given up on waxing or shaving. It's growing way too thick and too fast. I waxed and a week later I needed to go again. I wish the hair on my head was doing this, too!

  • If you've never had a wax before, DO NOT get a Brazilian! It's going to be pretty darn painful. Start with with a regular bikini wax, and follow pp's advice.

I've been getting waxed for a few years at a few different places. The ones that use soft wax (where they put the wax on and then pull it off with fabric strips) hurts the worst. When you are calling to ask around, ask if they always use hard wax (where the wax goes directly on your skin and they pull it off). It's WAY less painful, and faster. I won't ever go back to a place that uses soft wax.

  • I haven't had one since my BFP, but I am a big fan and am trying to find the time to go soon. While they obviously aren't *comfortable*, I never found them to be unbearably awful, either. However, I do think the pps advice to start with a bikini wax is good, especially if you have sensitive skin.

  • I've been getting them regularly for several years.  It is not pleasant...some times its better than others.  I have  yet to get one since beging pregnant as I've heard it hurts more...but I think soon as I cant stand it much longer.

  • I forgot to add that it does hurt more when pregnant Indifferent

  • Having been waxed prior to BFP and finding that it hurt allllllllot, I have decided that I'll be shaving throughout pregnancy. I know it has to be done more often than waxing, but I know that things are only going to get more sensitive and for me, that's my choice.

I have to say that it seems the pain associated with waxing is a very individual thing so for you it might be not too bad or it might be he**. I think pp had a great suggestion of starting with a little less and seeing how it goes from there.

  • Never had one before, but I would highly recommend taking care of down there before labor

If you need c/s, they will send the meanest nurse with the dullest clippers ever to "prep" you for surgery.  That was one of the worst parts of my c/s, so I'm definitely trimming the bush before labor this time

  • I do NOT sugest it.

One you have increase sensitivity due to increased blood flow.

Two, your hair should be growing faster by now.

Three, it would be awful if you got an infection down there, which does happen without taking care of it properly. As it will be your first, that might increase the likelihood of it. Google info on the infections if your unsure, or if you want one still so that you know how to prevent it.

I suggest investing in an easy to use women's electric razor. One with a foil head. That way you can shave often, which is nice because you might have more hair there than ever. And it will be easy/safe for you to use it, or your partner if it gets difficult for you to reach.

  • it hurts like most waxing does the first time but it gets better - i'm all for being cleaned up down there before my due date, but i'm usually fairly well groomed anyways........ i'd say get one now while you aren't too far along in your pg - see how it goes for you and then you can decide if you think it was worth it?

  • It hurts like hell, but I think it's worth it.....I got a Brazilian on my first wax (waxer totally tricked me into it) and I'm so happy she did.  I don't think I would have ever upgraded from a regular wax to Brazilian, had I not been duped into it.   I think it's a personal decision though, I keep regularly groomed so I can't imagine not continuing it through my pregnancy.  It definitely hurts less after a while though, the longer and thicker the hair is, the worse it hurts.

  • It's bad - but I've totally let... down there... go wild. It is growing at such a rate that it requires far more time and effort than I am willing to put in. Never mind the fact that my vagjay is getting more and more difficult to see without the assistance of a mirror... haha!

My DH is being a good sport about it, but almost passed out with laughter when he saw the lovely inner thigh hair peaking out from the legs of my panties last night. (Sorry if that's TMI, but i'm actually cracking up all over again.)

Pregnancy is such a mind trip, so many changes happening to our bodies. 6 months ago I was meticulous in keeping that bikini area trim and neat.I think it's wonderful and natural how quickly things / priorities have changed for me. (of course it's different for everyone...) :)

Yes. This. And if my husband doesn't care- I certainly don't!

  • I used to be a religious Brazilian waxer, until I got laser hair removal (also Brazilian), but it didn't work that well so I'm back to square one.  I had to stop waxing during the laser treatments and I haven't started up again, I've just been shaving, but I think I might go back and get it done.

I mean, it doesn't feel good, especially getting waxed right before your period (which I assume is similar to getting waxed while pregnant?).  It is what it is. I used to take 2 Tylenol about half an hour before my appts and that helped.  It just looks so much better than shaving and the grow-in is so much better (I get bumps from shaving no matter what I do), so it's a trade-off.

The best thing to do is find a waxer that is highly recommended - check Yelp for your area.  A good waxer will be quick and it'll hurt less - I've had bad waxers and believe me, you don't want that experience (bruising, etc).  With a good waxer it's pretty quick so it doesn't hurt that long.

  • I just had a Brazilian right before Xmas, and it DID hurt more than when i was not pregnant... however, I had let myself go a bit, and even the waxer commented that I had waited too long, Embarrassed and thats why it was hurting (i didnt tell her I was pregnant and I wasnt showing at that point)

Personally, I would just jump right in and get the Brazilian... if you have a good waxer  - you are in and out in 5 minutes  - and the pain goes away pretty quickly... its not like you'll be sore in the hoo ha all day.

  • I got Brazillians for about 6 years straight and it never got less painful, though some days were a little better than others depending on hair growth and I guess cycle day.  Now I get something between a Braz. & bikin.  Narrow on the sides and top, and get the crack done.  Then I trim down the middle myself with H's electric razor (heehee).  Last time I went my waxer even trimmed the middle for me.  I have to admit, I did shave the whole thing a few weeks ago out of desperation and plan on talking myself in getting waxed this weekend.

    Good luck!

  • I've done a brazilian on a woman the day before her induction.

It may hurt a little bit more but maybe not..

  • I used to get Brazillians a few times a year, but I'm scared of getting one while pregnant (and they really didn't bother me that much before). I've heard if you find a place that uses hard wax that's better for pregnancy. I would be very hesitant to get my first wax while pregnant. The first few were the hardest for me, even with not getting them very often, then I started to get more used to it.

I am loving my trimmer right now! It's much easier than shaving and is helping me keep things in check down there. If my belly makes this unmanageable later, I probably will suck it up and go in for a wax. We'll see!

  • Eh, it's not THAT bad. I doesn't feel like a relaxing spa treatment, but it's certainly manageable. Start now. I agree with pps advice about finding a reputable place. Make sure they don't double dip. If you have a European Wax Center near you, they def don't double dip. I go there for my leg waxing (I had lazer brazilian so I dont need to wax anymore), and I've been really pleased.

I would recommend doing it. Each time you go, your hair will get thinner and it will be less painful. The first time is the most painful, because the hair is the coarsest. The most painful part is the hair right in the middle of your pubic bone, so if you leave a "landing strip" it will hurt less.

  • I've been going regularly for Brazilians for the past 7 years, once a month. The key is to really have someone experienced at a reputable spa or salon. I haven't really felt that much of a change in pain level since I've been pregnant, though. It definitely hurts, I heard hard wax is better, but I'm pretty used to them by now and don't really consider them that big of a deal.
