XP from 3rd: Suggestions before i go crazy

Im so over this pain! My back has gotten so bad that I can't even sleep anymore! I think Ive gotten a total of 8 hours since Friday.

Ive tried tylenol pm and also benadryl. Nothing is helping me sleep!!

I have a million things to do before LO is here and I have no energy to do any of it! And since Im now officially in this by myself, I need to have some energy to get at least the baby stuff straight! Also I need to clean a couple of the room is the house.

Ugh- Im so frustrated. Even when I lay down at night, all I can do is toss and turn and think about everything that hasn't got done yet. I want to cry because I think I really need some sleep at this point, especially if I ever want to get things done.

I have a OB appt on Thursday, but my OB hasnt been very helpful in with this sleep issue before. He just told me to take benadryl, which truthfully has never worked on me before.

I just dont know what to do - any suggestions?

  • Have you tried a maternity brace during the day, and reducing how much you bend over. Then sleep with a body pillow at night. That is what has helped my back pain.

  • Ditto PP and also it is ok to take unisom for sleep

  • If you are having that much back pain visit a chiropractor who has experience dealing with pregnant women. I went starting in 2nd tri.

If you are not comfortable with that try a maternity support belt.

  • Just as an FYI I love my maternity support belt.  I've had some serious issues with back pain pretty much since 14 weeks, it has literally had me stuck in bed not because I didn't want to move but because I physically could not move out of the position I was in for like 2 hours.  The support belt has been amazing and has made laying down so much more comfortable at night after a busy day.  (I am regretting not wearing mine today)

  • Can you not sleep solely because of the back pain, or do you think you are experiencing pregnancy insomnia? Especially if you are stressed/anxious and thinking about the 1000 things you still need to do that alone will make it so that you cannot sleep much, if at all. I have heard of some dr's giving women sleeping aids for this like Ambien- have you mentioned you think you are sleep deprived due to anxiety? When I had a cold my ob nurse told me to take benedryl to help me sleep, and it did the opposite for me too and I just laid there awake for hours :(

I dont know if it will help with your back pain but did you try a snoogle pillow? I love mine so much, I don't know how i would sleep without it and I have yet to have any back pain (and I have to stand all day at work) but I know the back pain can also depend on LO's position and where you have been gaining baby weight can effect your poor back :(

  • Have you tried Unisom? It's the only sleep aid that works for me - Benadryl makes me hyper! I would try taking Tylenol for pain, Unisom for sleep, a body pillow (or two or three) and maybe taking a heat pack to bed? The heat pack is the ONLY thing that helps with my back pain when I'm sitting up. Chiropractor or massage? I hope you find something that works for you!

  • my doc suggested prenatal massage for me if it gets bad.  and really, how bad is a massage at any time?
  • I second the chiropractor idea. It really has been a lifesaver for me. Your insurance probably covers some as well! DO IT!! I promise you will not regret it!

  • My OB had me try tylenol PM and then benedryl which worked at first. Then she put me on Tylenol #3 with codeine. And although that did work I don't like taking narcotics during pregnancy. Now she has me in physical therapy three times a week and it does seem to be helping quite a bit. I still have back pain but it's not nearly as bad as it was before. I even bought one of those exercise balls to use at home so I can keep doing the exercises my therapist has me doing. And sleeping with either a body pillow or a pregnancy pillow has made a difference as well.
