Shea - for a boy?

I love the name Seamus (pronounced SHAY-mus).  I know it's a take or leave it kind of name for many of you. My husband would prefer if we called future DS Shea.

So to my question...would you use Shea as a nn? Or Shay? Or are both on the girly side?

TIA!

Re: Shea - for a boy?

  • I like Shea for a boy too. My husband did not. We went with Shane. After Shane was born when we told people about Shea most people told me it was for a girl not a boy :( I still like it for a boy, but you are going to hear that a lot

  • My nephew is Seamus and we call him Shea (or shay -- I never actually have to spell it since it is always spoken) for short sometimes, but he mostly just called the full name Seamus. I think it is a cute nickname.
  • I consider it very feminine and it even has an alternate meaning 'from the fairy fort' according to thinkbabynames.  I would stay away to prevent embarrassment.

  • I'd use neither Shea nor Shay, but just because I dislike them both, not because I think they're girly. I've only known guy Sheas (and no Shays). If I had to pick one, I'd go with Shea.

  • I've only met one girl named Shea - and everyone tells her she has a boy's name. I'm pretty sure it's traditionally male.

  • I like Seamus and think you could use Shea for a boy or a girl- it is really not a feminine name to me at all.

  • I know a little boy named Shea, so I like it :)  I've known girls with the name Shea as well.  If you're going to use Seamus and call him Shea/Shay- it could be more of a casual nickname like people call someone named Ashley "Ash", but she wouldn't write that down on her school papers?  We call my cousin Alyssa "Lyss" sometimes when talking to her, but she doesn't actually shorten her name to that or write it, know what I mean?
  • While I would never use the name Seamus, I really like the way it sounds.  I always thought Shea was a girls name but I have an acquaintance who named her son Shea.

  • My Brother In-Law is named Shea. He's a class clown type of guy, and therefore is usually the one who makes fun of people, so he never gets teased about his name. But I don't think he would get made fun of anyway. Shea is a valid spelling for boys (see below). One of our girl friends expands his name to Seamus sometimes (in a good way- she's not making fun of him).

    According to BehindTheName.com:

Shea is a unisex Irish spelling

Shay is masculine Irish spelling, or a unisex Hebrew spelling

Shae is a feminine English(modern) spelling.

If I personally was using this name, I would use Shea for a boy and Shae for a girl.

  • (lurker...bumping from phone...::::wave::::) My name is Shay, but the ONLY other two "Shay's" I've ever met were both males, and spelled "Shea"...when I was little I hated my name because I thought it was a boy name! I love it now though. I say go for it!

  • I love the name Seamus. To me Shea is a guy's name.  It makes me think of the NHL player Shea Webber & a player in the Canadian Football League named Shea Emry - both super fit athletes that no one would dare call girly.
  • Also a lurker... my name is Shaylee.

I've met one boy named Shea, and one girl named Shay.  It's totally unique and I get complimented almost everyday.

Not sure about Seamus.  IMO people are going to call him Sea - mus, without knowing the correct pronunciation.
