Babies: 6 - 9 Months

6 month check up...does any one else have a LO with a large head circumference?

Hello,

I just returned from my little guy's six month appointment and I am a little concerned. His head circumference falls in the 90th percentile.  At his 4 month appointment it was more like in the 75th percentile.  Have any of you had a little one that has a larger  head circumference.  Did it remain in a high percentile at the next check-up.  Was it something that concerned you?  The dr. didn't seem too concerned.

Re: 6 month check up...does any one else have a LO with a large head circumference?

  • My LO's head circumference has always been in the 85 - 90 percentile. I don't think you need to be concerned, especially if pedi wasn't. 75 to 90 isn't that big of a jump. If anything, you could feel a little better. Whether it's true or not I don't know, but I've heard head circumference is related to intelligence. Bigger head = smarter kid. Like I said, I don't know if that's true or not.

  • What percentile are his height and weight? If they are on the higher side too I would think everything is perfect. Am I missing something though, is there something bad with having a "big" head," medically speaking? Your LO looks perfect and adorable to me so I really wouldn't worry!

  • I wouldn't be concerned if your pediatrician wasn't.  It's not like he is off the charts or anything.
  • DS has a big head too. At 4 months, it was 92nd percentile. At 6 months, it's 96th percentile. I'm not worried but now I know why it's difficult to get some shirts over his head. :/

  • DS was always 75th-90th with his head and now he is between 50 and 75th. Don't worry at all
  • At DD's 6 month check up, the pedi said her height and weight are right around the 50th percentile, but her head is on the larger side (she didn't give a percentage), but that it is nothing to worry about.

  • My LO 's head circumference is in the 75th percentile.  I think at his 2 month appointment it was FIVE percent and then it jumped up to 75th at his 4th month.  Craziness!  I don't see a reason to be worried about it though.

  • Logan's head is up above the 95th percentile.  His height is, as well.  DH and almost everyone on his side of the family have big heads, too.  I don't think it's anything to worry about.
  • Annabelle has been in the 99th percentile for her head since birth. The doc didnt seem concerned until her last appointment, and now we have to see a pediatric neurologist. BUT, her weight and height is in the 75th percentile. Personally, I think my pedi is a moron, and if I could switch I would. If your pedi didnt seem concerned, I wouldnt worry about it. Had ours not put in for us to see a pediatric neurologist, I wouldnt of thought anything of her big head. :]

  • Elise has a big head. It's always been above the 90th percentile, and at our last couple appointments it's been in the 98th percentile. We had a recheck a couple months ago that went fine, but at her last appointment the doctor decided that he wanted another recheck. Basically, the pedi wants to see the percentile curve even out a bit and not go straight up, which is why he does the rechecks instead of waiting for the next well child appointment.

Elise is also 93% for height and 75% for weight and my husband's whole family has big heads, so I'm not really worried about it. But it certainly can be an issue and a large head can be a sign of other medical problems, so I'm glad our pedi is so careful about checking her. If your pedi seems fine with it and since it was only the 90th percentile, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

  • My LO's head is 48 cm at 6 months. That's 110th percentile. He's 75th for weight and 90th for height. (19lbs and 28"). My pedi isn't worried about his head because it is still growing on a normal curve and he comes from a long line of big headed people on both sides :)

  • DD was at 90% percentile at the 4 mo appt and was up to 99th at her 6 month appt. I was not surprised since big headed babies are normal in our family. We just tell ourselves it's because she has a big brain. Smile
