Babies: 9 - 12 Months

I have a confession

If either of my 10 month old twins wake up in the middle of the night and won't go back to sleep after we let them fuss, I'll break out the bottle and give them a few ounces.  They'll go back almost immediately.

My pedi would spank me if she knew that.  However, she doesn't have twins and a job to go to.:)

Anyone else?  Just curious.

Re: I have a confession

  • I would do it in a heartbeat. Luckily, Joseph doesn't get up.

  • Charlotte was up at 12:45 the other day and wouldn't go back to sleep... no matter what. By 3 am, I got out a dang bottle, and fed her. She went back to sleep! Would totally do it again if it occured, but luckily they usually just go back to sleep.
  • On the rare occasion Emerson gets her happy little bottom up, I do the exact same thing...oh well.

  • I've been doing that with DS all along and have really been trying to wean him of the thinking that he needs to eat at night. My pedi totally let me have it at his 6 month appointment and I know I need to stop doing it. But it's so much easier on me then letting him cry and hoping he goes back to sleep. I fail.

He still wakes at least twice a night, so I get pretty desperate for sleep.?

  • Me too.. DD is 8 months, but that's what I do because I'm exhausted and it's easier to BF for a minute then listen to a baby cry for 45 minutes!

  • I'm bad too, when DD wakes up I just bring her back to bed with me a BF its so much easier than trying to put her back to sleep without a midnight snack
  • I don't understand?  Are you not supposed to feed  your child if they are hungry in the middle of the night?  This would never work around here.   I rely on these magical boobs way to much to get some sleep - for us both!
  • I'm confused, too.

  • Eh, if I wake up hungrey, I can't go back to sleep either.

  • What a novel thought...10 month olds occasionally being hungry at night...

Seriously, why wouldn't you feed them?

  • I do it when he wakes up and wont go back to sleep.

  • umm...i feed dd in the middle of the night each night! my ped didn't say anything about it at our 9 month visit.  if dd is hungry, i feed her.  if i'm hungry i have a hard time going to sleep too, why would it be any different for a baby?
  • Guilty here...but we are trying to break it!

  • I don't know what's wrong with that, if DS wakes up, I always nurse him and then put him back to bed...
  • My nearly 11 month old  DD is a member of the midnight booby club, too!

  • I do too!  DD wakes every night, really morning, between 3-6 am, and I give her 4 oz and she is back out.  I know that she doesn't need it, it has just become a habit, but I really have a lot going on right now and don't have the time to try and break it!  Some one told me the other day that I should feed her sweet potatoes for her evening meal.  They said that the sweet potatoes take longer to digest, so they stay full longer, and sleep better.  Don't know if works, it sounds like a wives tale, but I might give it a try!
  • I let my DS sleep with me when he gets up at night. I know not good. Oh well I really just wanted to say...

     GO PHILLIES!!!!!!!!!!

  • My DD wakes up between 1 and 3 every night and wont go back to sleep without eating. Her best feedings are usually the night ones since she will actually nurse without distraction!  It's a struggle during the day to get her to eat with all the stuff she gets distracted by. And as for the sweet potatoes theory, doesn't work with my DD. She will still wake up to eat in the middle of the night. My pedi is really going to push for me to take the night feedings away and let her CIO. I'm not going to do it though. It's my baby and if she's hungry in the night she's going to get food.
  • ohh my pedi would kick all your asses. Word for word, the lecture I got-

"Unless your baby weighs less than 10lbs, they can sleep through the night without "being hungry". They are using you for comfort since they go in and out of sleep cycles, and sometimes they don't know how to get themselves back down.

It's not going to ever stop if you don't stop it...."

  • Well i am guilty too if he needs a bottle he gets one.  I can always tell the difference he woke up out of hunger or just because.  If he gulps a 4 ounce bottle then he was hungry if he takes an ounce hes probably either thirsty or using it to go back to bed.

But one thing i have noticed is that since hes been on strictly table food the past two weeks hes totally seeming satisfied at night now.  He went to bed at 7pm last night that was his last bottle till he woke at 8am this morning.  So in our case i think hes more satisfied with the real food.  IMO

  • My 11 month old still gets up once a night and won't calm down or go back to sleep until I give him a bottle. I should be trying to wean him from overnight feedings, but it's easier to just give him a bottle so we can all go back to sleep as quickly as possible.
