XP: C/S complication? (not VBAC related)

OK, so this is not VBAC related - I was not a VBAC candidate. I figure that everyone here has had a c/s so I'm posting here in hopes that someone can help me. Thanks.

My first c/s was amazing - really quick and easy recovery, even though I labored for 12 hours beforehand. This c/s was planned and my recovery is so awful and just strange. I had my baby on 12/22.

First - my incision has healed wonderfully. It doesn't hurt anymore at the incision site, and my ab muscles feel good. Laughing, coughing and sneezing hurt a little, but I'm feeling good.

However, I have a patch of skin on my left side, about 6" above my incision that hurts like hell. It's intense, and definitely a 10 on the pain scale. I can not talk through the pain, I can barely think through the pain. It doesn't hurt when I'm sitting, but as soon as I stand up and gravity goes to work on my belly flab then the pain is there and it is unbearable.

I went back to my OB for this and she thinks that maybe my sutures are irritating some nerves and hopefully when the sutures dissolve this problem will be resolved. The pain coincided with my feet and legs swelling, so she thinks that retaining water is also putting pressure on everything. They did an ultrasound but nothing unusual showed up. If I still have this problem next week when I go back then I will have a CT scan.

So my question is - has anything like this happened to anyone else, and if so, what caused it? Can you think of anything that would help? Any words of wisdom are welcome.

TIA

  • I'm so sorry about your pain, it sounds awful Sad  The only thing I can think of that "may" help... have you tried one of those abdominal bands?  They gave me one after my c/s with DD.  My OB said it helped to hold my abdominal organs/muscles/etc in place.  From my understanding of your post, it sounds like that may help.  GL and I hope you get some relief soon!  Can you ask your OB for pain meds (assuming you haven't already been taking them...)?  HTH.

  • Thanks.

I hadn't looked into the bands, but I will now. My OB has me on Percoset and Ibuprofen but it's really not helping.

  • I'm so sorry you are dealing with this.  I don't know what it could be, but I would keep on my doctor until it gets figured out or gets better.  Be your own advocate as much as you can and if you feel like your current doctor is not listening or being proactive enough, find someone who will be.

GL and please keep us posted on how things go.

  • First, congratulations on the newest addition!

Second I agree with the post about the bands, it might help with the skin pulling when you stand...I used one when I had DS and I will be getting this one for this baby...https://csectionrecoverykit.com/

Good luck and I hope your feeling better soon!

  • Okay, my nerves were, uh, totally messed up after my c-section. I think part of it might have been the spinal anesthesia, which they had to cover with a general anyway because I had a window of feeling. Anyway, I had a numb/painful spot on my butt for like months, and plenty of other painful spots.

However, I haven't had anything like you're describing - the pain was always more like a really bad funny bone or being stabbed with a big needle. Anyway, I blame the spinal. That crap can mess you up. I hope they fix the problem soon. My c-section was actually more recent, so it seems like you shouldn't be having crazy pain like that anymore. Good luck.

  • Thanks everyone! I'm going back to the doctor tomorrow, and will be insisting that we do whatever tests she can think of. I've also ordered a band that should be here Wednesday.

Hers was two weeks ago, so if your pg ticker is accurate, I don't see how that's possible.

  • I had this exact pain & it lasted FOREVER.  The MW that did rounds in the hospital said that it was probably from the clamp that held the flap of skin open during the surgery.  I think I was on the percocit for quite a while because of that alone.  I hope that it gets better for you soon.
