I can't help you there. Where I live there is 1 pedi for the entire area and you either need a referral to see her, or to show up in the ER with an extremely ill child. She works out of the hospital.
Our family doctors and public health nurses do our primary care. Drs do baby well check ups or illness, public health nurses do the vaccines and are always available for phone help/ support.
I live in a city of 75,000 and I'm also going to take our son to our family doctor- it's just easier for me to be able to ask about my own health at the same time.
Our OB and hospital here work with one at the hospital. When baby comes out, he goes right to the pedi for a work up. This means immediate care. At my next appt. with the OB, I will ask more about this scenario and what I should be looking for.
When I had DS my OB was also a pedi for the first 5 years of life. It was SO nice. This time around I am in a small town and my doctor was an OB who now does family practice, so he will also be taking care of this baby. We don'e even have a Pedi in town and the one in the next town is a major asshat who I refuse to ever see again.
Diabetic, 2IF, PCOS; blessed beyond words to be called "mommy" to Drew (6/30/09) and Alynn (5/16/11).

I'm actually gonna ask about this at my appointment on Thursday. I don't know anything about any of the peds in town so I'm gonna see if there is anyone that my doc likes and then go from there. Do I need to meet with the ped ahead of time or just pick them out? I do know that they come to the hospital to check out the baby after their born.
I live in a large city with one of the best medical centers in the world (Houston) so we have the opposite problem of many of the PPs. Our MW gave us list of pedis they recommend that also have privileges at our children's hospital which was important to me (why live so close and not be able to use it in an emergency?) I plan to start with the list from the MWs and get recommendations from moms who live nearby as well. We were told to start looking in Feb-March.
When are you all going to start looking for pedi's? Am I late in this?
We have picked a pedi we would like to use. We called them last week to see if they were taking new patience and they were. We also asked them if we needed to schedule an appointment with them now so we can get established with them and they said no. All we have to do is call a day after we have her and they will set everything up!! So hopefully everything is good to go!!
My OB gave me a timeline type thing of when i should be doing what. selecting a Ped is listed as no later than 6 weeks prior to your due date in case you have a premie. She suggested meeting with a min of 3 and to ask many questions. She also gave me a list of peds that have rights at the same hospital i will be delivering at so that if there is a need, they are right there.
Re: since we are on a health trend... let's talk doctors
