Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Just not a talker...

Okay, so I know that all babies develop and hit milestones in their own time but DD is 19 months old today and doesn't really talk. She babbles a lot and gets her point across and she understands when we speak to her but there are no real words. She doesn't even really try to repeat words either. Could it be that she is just not a big talker? I know that I didn't speak until really late so I'm not that worried but I'm thinking that maybe she may need some speech therapy. Anyone else have this same dilemma?

Re: Just not a talker...

  • Does she use a paci?  If not, i think all babies are different and maybe she just isnt'  a talker.  Has she always been quiet?  Has her dr been concerned?  Sorry not much help..  Good luck.

  • I am not dealing with this personally but my best friend's son is the same way. He just started first steps he turned 2 in December. The first steps lady said that she should have started him earlier bc they only help until 3 years old and then he would have to go to special ed classes if he was not picking it up quick enough. If you are worried just give your local first steps and call and they will do a free evaluation to see if she needs some help with talking. It is better to be proactive on these types of things. Good luck.

No, she's actually never used a paci... never like them!  Her doc suggested that she may need some speech therapy but he wasn't overly concerned because other then the no talking thing, she's a completely normal toddler. I called them so that she can be evaluated so we shall see what happens!

  • My son is the same way, gets his point across and totally understands everything. However, he does have a vision issue and recently got glasses. We just started speech therapy last week so we'll see what happens. All kids develop at their own pace and I say the speech therapy certainly couldn't hurt so maybe it is worth checking into. Good luck!
