Babies: 0 - 3 Months

FFers- what amount are you giving?

Were currently feeding 4 oz a feeding, every 3-4 hours. He's almost 5 weeks. He acts hungry when were done and he gets very cranky (chewing on hands) but last week when we told the dr he ate 4-6 oz per feeding she said we were way over feeding him and to stick to 4 oz at most right now. How much is your 5 week old eating, or if they're older do you remember what they were at at this age?

  • DS was eating 3, maybe 4 oz at a time at that age. He's 2.5 months now and for awhile I had him at 5-6 oz but backed him down to 4 every 3-4 hours and he's still doing really well with that. He'll take 5 when he wakes up in the morning and before bed at night, but he generally spits up a lot more with 5 oz.

  • I don't remember what DS ate back then, but babies don't know how to overeat IMO.  DS would start spitting out his formula if it was too much.  I he can handle 4-6oz then I would feed him that.  I would definitely do more than 4oz if he still seems hungry.  Good luck.

  • If he's still acting hungry after you feed him, then give him more. You're not over feeding him. He's hungry. I know all pedi's are different but setting a limit of how much to feed your baby is nuts.
  • I do 4 ozs to start and then if he is still hungry I make up 1 more ounce and that usually tops him off.

  • how much is he sleeping over night?  How much total in a day?

I do not think any amount per feeding is too much.  But you could be feeding too much through the entire day.

DD is a small eater.  She only takes 4-5 ounces 4-5 times a day.  At most she eats 20 ounces a day.  She sleeps 10-11 hours over night.

He has colic so he doesn't sleep much. We feed pretty consistently throughout the day at 3-4 hours. At night he'll sleep about 5 hours. Were lucky if we get 2 naps during the day.

  • Sometimes a bottle fed baby CAN overeat.  They don't have to work as hard to get milk.  The milk comes faster and sometimes their brains can't process that they are full in time.

I would try feeding him a little less and waiting 30-45 minutes.  If he is still acting hungry at that time feed a little bit more!

  • I was just just giving my five week old four ounces and she'd cry an hour afterwards still hungry. I've upped it to five ounces every three hours or so and she is happy, happy! I'm a first time parent though. I'm not sure what's normal.
  • He eats what he wants - anywhere from 3 oz to 4 1/2 oz every 2-4 hours.  I thought it seemed like way too much but my pedi recommended he be getting between 28 and 32 oz a day and LO usually wants around 30-32/day.  LO is 11lb 1 oz and 22 1/2 inche.

  • Another option could be to slow down his eating. If he eats fast he could not be getting the cues that he is full. Use a slower nipple or stop and burp after each ounce. If he's still showing hunger signs after that then I say feed him more.

How big is he? DD is 2 weeks and eating 2-4oz every 3-4 hours. Our pedi thinks that's perfect for our 9 pound baby.

  • We are basically the same as Copernicus.  LO was eating 4 ounces very well then she backed off to only eating 2 ounces about every other feeding.  She is just now getting back up to eating 4 ounces the majority part of the time. Sometimes she will just eat 3 out of the 4.  LO will also eat 5 oz when she wakes up after her long stretch at night and I also normally give her 2 -3 oz before bed.  With her schedule she will eat at around 6:30 or so so I'll give her the extra at around 7:45 or 8.  I actulaly just started this in hopes of getting her to sleep longer back like she was before so lets see if it works.

Are you sure you don't have my baby?  This sounds like my life exactly.

Anyway, my LO is almost 6 weeks and she eats 3-5 ounces every 3-4 hours.  Probably eats 28 ounces total a day.

He is 10lb 4oz. That's what were doing now- slower nipple, burping every ounce (or trying to..he's a horrible burper!) it's so frustrating! I appreciate everyones imput greatly!
