Budget

What do you think is a reasonable monthly budget for groceries for a family of two adults and a toddler?

Re: Budget

  • I don't know about reasonable, but our budget is about $500-600 per month. That includes my OTC heartburn med (Prevacid) and toiletries and cleaning supplies per month.  We spend about $150-200 every few months at Costco to stock up on paper towels, toilet paper, razors (for me and DH), paper products, etc.

I'd like to spend less, but inevitably our weekly grocery bill ranges from $120-$150.

  • Us too, about $500-$600 a month, including toiletries and cleaning supplies. Even at Walmart the bill is that high, food and other stuff has gotten so expensive!

  • We're somewhere between $400 and $600 depending on what we need to stock up on that month.

  • Evidently I am really frugal.  I would say at the most it is $400 a month with a baby who eats table food and formula.  I shop for a lot of items at the dollar store, ie cleaning supplies, paper towels and napkins, some toiletries (toothpaste for instance), and this is the only place I buy things like birthday cards and wrapping paper (not groceries but I tossed that in anyway).  I also go to produce markets for fruit and veggies, and go to Aldi's for much of our groceries.  I doubt that this budget will change much as DD goes into toddlerhood as we buy a lot of fruits and veggies for her now and I'm a firm believer in children eating what mom & dad eats.

  • Wow, I guess I'm on the cheaper end than I thought. We spend about $150 every two weeks for 2 adults, LO and 3 cats for all our food and supplies. Probably every 8 weeks we'll do a Costco run for bulk items (tp, paper towels etc.) for about $150.

I want to get back in the habit of ordering Bountiful Baskets for produce, and that will save us even more...

  • We average $400-500 per month, including household supplies.

What is reasonable depends on your budget, cost of living, typical diet, etc.

    DD1 is 3, DD2 is 1.
  • Wow, I guess we overspend then. I spend about $200 a month on diapers/pull-ups and wipes only, never mind the groceries. We have 2 LO's though. Plus the oldest comes home for breaks and buys her own groceries (using my credit card) as she doesn't like to eat what we are eating.

  • I feel like I should know the answer to this...

Best guess after adding up our trips to wholesale clubs and grocery stores when it was just the 3 of us would be about $800-$1000 a month.

Oh, wait. That would have included food for 3 HUGE dogs (two on special prescription food). We are down to 1 dog now so eliminate that cost and it would be more like $600-$800 a month.

This is closer to true for us once we add in all the little side trips to the store, foods specifically for Ada, cats etc. We do live in one of the most expensive cities in the country, are eating almost exclusively organic, and have a taste for very high quality coffe :-) Good food is one thing I'm willing to shell out a little extra for. In exchange, we still drive our POS 1999 grand am.

  • I spend between $500 and $700 a month for two adults, one baby, one 17-year-old and a cat.  The 17-year-old got a deer this past November so we will be eating a great deal of venison plus the half a lamb that we bought at the county fair in August.

Okay, I'm going to learn from you! I'm going to try the dollar store for the things you mentioned. We've been spending between 500-600 and I just think it's crazy.
