She talked to me for about an hour about my concerns, desires and the way she runs her practice. One of the coolest things was that when I first walk in, I just go right to the bathroom (no rude nurse to escort me) and take out the urine test strips in the cabinet and pee on it and see for myself if it changes colors. If it does, I simply bring it into the room with me and we go over what it means. I also weigh myself and tell her what it is. I like this, I feel proactive in my own care already.
Then inside the room she does my blood pressure and listens to the heartbeat and measures and feels around. She told me she doesn't like to get wrapped up in statistics since every pregnancy and birth is different and there is nothing to say that my pelvis won't accomodate. She did mention the slight risk of rupture and said that when it does happen, a majorty of the cases are when a slight tear is noticed when the mom goes in for a repeat CS.
She recommended a doula (the one she used for her own births) and encouraged me to do prenatal yoga and watch my weight. She said she will do all she can to get me prepared and increase my chances. Yay! Love her!
She also told me how she doesn't perform c-sections (she could if she did a fellowship or something to that effect) but not being able to enables her to really do the best she can for her patients to have a vaginal delivery. If her patients should need a c-section, she has 3 backup OBs....and if it should come down to that she doesn't get paid a dime for the delivery. It all goes to the OB. So I could labor for 24 hours and need the section and the OB gets it all for 10 mins of surgery! She assured me she didn't tell me that so that I would feel guilty for needing one or even changing my mind and wanting one, just so that I would know that there is no incentive for her to give me a c-section. Unlike OBs, who get paid more from insurance companies to perform them. In fact, hospitals have boards that review c-sections to make sure OBs aren't overperforming them for the money and convenience. Crazy, huh?
So I'm definitely making the switch to her from my huge OB practice. I love the care I'll be getting and feel comfortable deciding to go through a trial of labor with her.
Re: Met with my family doctor today-it went great!
This is really interesting. I wasn't aware that family doctors could deliver babies. Perhaps this broadens my serach parameters for future providers.
