Blunt post C-section constipation question

This is blunt: I'm 7 days PP and haven't had pooed yet.  I've been taking the Colace since it was offered and even took a Dulcolax today (lowest dose).  I'm really uncomfortable and think that my full intestines may be contributing to discomfort near my internal incisions.  How long did it take for you to go and do you have any suggestions on things to try?

  • I don't remember exactly but it was within a couple days. Can you try eating some prunes? THis always does it for me. I'll eat 7 or 8 of them and usually have "relief" within a day.

  • Took me quite awhile and I started worrying awhile. But as long as you have been passing gas then you shouldn't really worry yet. When you do reach relief, prepare yourself, and don't push! Just let it pass.
  • I didn't have a c-section, but I was in the same boat. I was 17 days pp and still hadn't gone. I was in so much pain and wanted to die.(I actually would have preferred labor pains to the constipation pains.) I tried everything. I took my colace at the max dose. I ate a TON of prunes. Tons of fiber. I took dulcolax. And it still didn't work. I say on the toilet for days and never could go.. But what ended up working for me was "fleets enema". The one with mineral oil in it. It definatly helped lubricate it and make it come out. It worked within 30 minutes and I felt amazing. -it definatly still hurt when I went to the bathroom after but only like 1/10th of what it had hurt before the enema... wow. I totally sound like a commercial promoting fleets. Lol. But I hope this helps. -oh and it is totally safe to take while breast feeding. My sons pedi even told me to get it for him when he was constipated and my doc said it was ok for me too. GL! ----(sorry for spelling errors and that this is all mashed together. I'm posting from my phone.)
  • I had a c/s and it took me over 1 week and after I started pooping again I had a hemorrhoid really bad. That was do to me pushing for over 5 hours . Had to have a c/s due to baby being sunny side up and him being almost 9lbs. And I am a petite person. I took  Colace for over 2 weeks after. Drink plenty of Liquids. Good luck pooping!!!!!!

  • it took me about 8-10 days PP. I was so uncomfortable and then scared to go. My stomach was really hurting bad from needing to go. When I did finally go, it was not that bad, and I felt a million times better. After the first initial poo I was going much more than I ever have, it was a great relief for my stomach.

Just try to drink lots of water and eat lots of fruits and veggies. I think I also took some stool softener. HTH

  • This combo did it for me:  lots of water, Colce, Fiber One yogurt, and prune juice (at room temperature).  It wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be.

  • This sounds (and is) disgusting but mix a glass of prune jiuce with milk of magnesia and microwave till warm.  Drink the whole glass.  It works like a charm!!!
  • I upped my fiber and water and I took Senekot. None of that worked. I bought some glycerin supposies from Walgreen's and those worked like a charm!

  • Thanks ladies!  I finally went but it was a total flipping nightmare getting there.  I'm taking Colace every day until things are back to normal - good to know I'm not the only one.

  • I can't believe they let you out of the hospital without pooping.  My first was 2 days PP.   It took a bit, but it didn't hurt.  What hurt, however, was the random poo pains about a week PP.  I honestly think it's because I slacked off on the stool softeners.  I took them religiously in the hospital = no problems, didn't at home = massive discomfort.

Fwiw, I've heard peppermint tea can affect your milk supply if you're BFing

  • They wouldn't let me leave the hospital until I pooped.. SO they gave me a latxitve. which didn't do anything for me! but I squeezed out one small little pebble..

When I got home, I sent DH out and get me enema. and that worked WONDERS. hurt like a B!tch but I pooped, and felt better.

Like most things, it's when it becomes excessive, but if someone is having problems going, I wanted to make sure they knew that before they started drinking it by the gallon, ykwim?
