Digital SLR Camera Recommendations

I am thinking about purchasing a SLR camera.  I currently have a Canon Powershot which does a good enough job but I would really like something that takes nicer pictures.  I don't want to spend too much either (since I'm not a professional Wink) Is it possible to keep under $500??  Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. TIA

Re: Digital SLR Camera Recommendations

  • I just got the Canon Rebel T1i for Christmas and I love it!!  It's really light-weight and takes amazing pictures.  I think it runs about $700 dollars though :(  I would definitely recommend it and it got great reviews from Consumer Reports!  Good luck!

  • I have an Olympus E520, and it's pretty good. It's a lower-end SLR, so it's not as nice as some of the more expensive Canons and Nikons, but for someone who takes pictures casually, it's pretty good. I think we paid less than $400 for mine.

  • Another plug for the Canon T1i! The kit lense that it comes with is pretty good too, so no need for another spendy purchase unless you want to zoom a ton.

  • I'm also a Canon T1i owner/advocate!

I got mine for under $600 from butterflyphoto.com, I think, but I ordered the body only.  I got a fixed 50mm lens instead (under $100 bucks).  With the LO coming, I wish I had more of a wide angle lens.   Translated, while I love my 50 prime, get the kit lens!

  • I love my Canon Rebel (an older DSLR than the T1i). I spent time on ebay looking for a good deal and ended up with a package that came with 2 lenses, extra battery and memory card. I think it might have been around $800 at the time. I'm hoping to upgrade in the next year or so, but I'll stay with Canon and so I can use all the same lenses, batteries & memory cards. Good luck with your search.
  • The Sony Alpha series is actually seated in that price range.  On the other hand...

The Canon T1i/T2i and Nikon D3000/D5000 are all solid bets under $1200, depending on where the sale is... and you WILL need a sale for those.  The D3000 is probably cheapest of the lot, a good bet.  I own the D5000, and highly recommend it.
