Something to consider for birth plan - 'pulse ox'

My friend/co-worker had a son named David in May 2010 - he passed away in August 2010 from complications with his heart. It was and still is a very sad time for her and her family.

I'm at 37 weeks today and due 1/24. She asked me to make her a promise that I would add this to my birth plan...so I did some research and read about it and think I will.

Pulse Oximetry Screening for the baby as part of the newborn screening.

I am not pushing this on anyone but I had never heard of it - and am just throwing this out for other new moms to consider adding to their birth plan.

Re: Something to consider for birth plan - 'pulse ox'

  • pulse ox screening is becoming more and more common, and there is a huge push to make it mandatory. It's painless and is often free for the hospital (they own the equipment already).

If you'd like to read even more about congenital heart defects, I love www.corasstory.com Kristine (cora's mom) is working hard to fight so more people know. The simple pulse ox test can find many, but not all CHD's. And knowledge is power! :)

Thanks for the reminder, and for sharing your soapbox! :)

  • I am a lurker here but wanted to give a 'shout out' for CHDs. My Sister and my DH are both CHD survivors. I 'know' David's Mom because I volunteer for IMH, the organization that she is also in. I have yet to meet her, but I've exchanged a couple emails with her. What an incredible person she is.

  • Aimkins- you know David's mom? She's totally awesome! I hope you can meet her one day. She's an amazing person all around. :)

This test saved the life of the daughter of one of my friends.

The doctor told her that without this test, her DD's CHD would likely have gone undetected until it was too late.

Definitely a great thing to consider!

  • Really? Oh - I am glad to hear that!

I plan on asking my OB about it on Fri when I have my weekly appt. I have never heard of it - it is not mentioned in my birthing beginnings books or in the class I took.

I think after my co-worker/friend's baby died...they began very active in groups, etc. dealing with CHD issues. I hadnt heard about it til today when we got to talking about my due date-and she asked me if I would consider it - she also printed me a 3 page document with more detailed information. I think she is of the mindset that perhaps another baby's life could be saved - even if their precious son could not be.
