Trouble TTC

SA Results - WTH?

The nurse just called my DH's SA results. She started by saying they had never received results written like this. She said usually the results are just the numbers, not an analysis - however, this result just stated some "statements".

* The total motility was lower than 40 million (40 million is low)

* She said the recommended a repeat SA for DH

* They did say that we *could* be successful with IUI

The nurse has a call into my doctor for help understanding the results. Hopefully she will have more answers for us.

Couple of questions:

1. Anyone deal with problems with total motile sperm?

2. Anyone have this kind of insurance:

80% of eligible expenses after satisfying $1,000 deductible

                      for underlying medical condition only.

                     Not Covered Treatments:

                          ?         Drug Therapy

                          ?        In-Vitro fertilization

?        Gamete (GIFT) and zygote (ZIFT) intrafallopian

                         transfer  procedures.

Would IUI be covered? (What does "underlying medical condition" mean??) I tried calling the insurance company, but they just read right from the website and are not very helpful.

I was just hoping we could get some answers, but I am still feeling lost...

Re: SA Results - WTH?

  • I'm sorry you are going through this!

Our diagnosis is MFI as well. Our first SA with the RE was given to us in terms of numbers (we had 300,000 total with 8% motility). DH then went to the Urologist who sent a comprehensive explanation after the 2nd SA with a treatment recommendation (81 million total with 28% motility). We are starting IUI's this cycle. Is the Dr.s office you mentioned an RE? If not, i would highly recommend getting a referral to one.

As for insurance, I have never seen it stated like that before. I would call your company (write down the name of the person you speak to- talk to 2 different people if possible) and ask them to give you the detailed info on your fertility coverage.

I hope this helps a little- I know how terrible it is to feel so lost!! Good Luck!!

  • There are several ladies on here dealing with low motility including me.  My insurance doesnt cover the cost of meds or the actual IUI but it does cover office visits and all the monitoring which really helps.  I would seek the help of a RE if that is possible where you live. GL.

  • MH and I are dealing with MFI also.  MH has high numbers with 40% low motility at his last SA which was well over a yr ago.  We were of course told IVF was recomended but IUI could also work.  IVF is not an option for us so I am going to try 3 more IUI's in a row and hope I only have to do one more.  My ins covers the monitoring, but not the meds or the IUI.  I will be going back to the RE on Wed to start up the IUI's again.

I would recomend going to a specialist if the DR you are seeing isn't.  GL and hope you get some more understanding of the SA quickly!

  • Thanks ladies, for all of your sweet words.

I am going to wait to hear from my doc (my obgyn) about what she thinks about the results.

After we have my HSG on Thursday, I am going to take all the results and meet with a RE. I think that might be the best plan of action at this point.

  • One valuable resource I've found for dealing with insurance is the financial counselor at our RE's office. As she told me, you have to know the right questions to ask in order to get the right answers. And her job is to ask the right questions. It's been one of the great benefits of moving to a clinic where they specialize in IF. Good luck!
