Can you give a baby citrus fruits?

I'm eating an orange and DD is sitting on my lap.  She keeps reaching up for a bite, so I gave her a little nibble of the inside of a slice (just the pulp, none of the white skin stuff) and she's screaming for more.  I know oranges aren't on a list of foods to give LO, but what's the reason?

  • Citrus fruits commonly cause allergies.  Our pedi recommends no citrus in the first year.

ETA: Let me rephrase since my post was misunderstood.  Citrus is an allergenic food.  This hasn't been disproven.  What studies have shown is that you may not need to delay allergenic foods if your baby doesn't have a risk of sensitivity.  i.e. early introduction doesn't cause the allergy.

I also agree with PPs that it could be hard on their stomach in general.

  • The acid can be hard on their tummies, and apparently can be painful to poop out later since the acid doesn't completely digest.

The allergy theory has been disproven many times.

The fact that certain foods like citrus are allergenic has not been disproven.  What was disproven is that early introduction itself causes increased allergies.

    Correct.

  • I've also read that it can make pee more acidic and cause diaper rash though I have nothing to back that up.

I've given DD tastes of orange and she really likes it, but I only give her a few bites.

  • I've let DS chew on oranges before.  He's not able to get any of the pulp off but he sucks them dry.  He didn't have any issues from it.

  • I've read quite a bit of info that said not to because of the acidity. However, Ds sees a dietitian and she (along with his occupational therapist and pedi) all told me it was fine in moderation. Ds has been known to have an orange slide here and there. He's done fine with it so far.
