What kind of volunteer activities are you looking for? At nights? On the weekends? During the week?
I know there is a lot out there... especially regarding the schools.
Also, if you are at all interested, the Junior League of Tuscaloosa does a ton for the community and offers a lot of volunteer opportunities for its members. We'll be proposing new provisional members within the next couple of months. You can PM or send me a message on facebook if you are interested.

I just really want to share some of the time I have doing something for other people. I am not really picky about what I am doing...I just want to do something that makes a difference. I am looking mostly for things I can do on the weekends, but rare nights wouldn't be a problem.
I know a little about Junior League, but what does the "proposing new provisional members" process entail?
Basically once a year the JL brings in new members. You wouldn't have to do anything, I would just sponsor you as a new member. Your first year is your "provisional class" made up of new people. Your provisional class picks a project they want to do in the community and they raise funds for that project, usually in the fall, and do the project in the spring. My year we created a bird sanctuary/quiet reading area at a local elementary school playground. Last year, the provisional class did a rose garden at Shelby Park. Each year the provisional class also works with Holt Elementary to help some kids out as far as Christmas is concerned.
I'm brainstorming other volunteer opportunities. I know DCH often has volunteers helping. Salvation Army is also always welcoming volunteers. There is also Big Brothers, Big Sisters.
Also, there is a program through UA's child development program called Baby Talk where you would go to DCH and hand out childrens books to new moms in the delivery floor and talk to them about the importance of reading to their kids. (It targets to increase reading/literacy.)
Let me know if you need more ideas... or send me a message.

If you are interested in the arts, Kentuck is always looking for volunteers, for the museum/store and for the festival, which is in the fall. I was on the steering committee for the festival for a while last year, but then I got pregnant and was sick/tired a lot and couldn't really keep it up.
I've also volunteered with the local Habitat for Humanity chapter as a committee member. You can PM me for more details, but I'll just say I don't really recommend getting involved with them in that way. It may be a different story for construction volunteers.
