Babies: 3 - 6 Months

DD eats 3-4x during the night...am I alone here?

I BF, and we've been doing solds once a day and have just started offering solids twices per day.

The funny thing is, at least one of these night feeds she doesn't seem to need...she falls asleep at the breast hardly having taken anything in. If it was always the same feed....say, always the one that happens around 1am, I would try to wean her off of that (paci, ferber, NCSS...something!) but it varies, so I never know which "I'm hungry" cry she is serious about.

I have a hard time denying her food if that is what she really needs, but she eats every 2-3 hours AROUND THE CLOCK.

Also, I'm not convinced one way or the other if this is somehting she'll grow out of (then I'll happily let her grow through this) or if it is a habit that I have helped perpetuate (then I'll happily un-perpetuate it).

GAH!  Momma wanted to find some sleep under the Christmas tree this year...maybe next year :o)

  • Betsy did this for months--introducing the second solid meal really helped things.  She STTN now and is gaining weight again (she had dropped pretty drastically onthe growth curve at 6 months).  How long ago did you start the second solid?  When do you give her the second meal?

  • my DS is the same way...wont go for more than like 3 hours at night without waking up crying for a bottle....it's been like this for about 3 months.....i want to start solids soon but he just refuses to eat it....so im in the same boat!

We started doing 2 meals per day Jan 1st. Her second meal will either be at lunch or at dinner (not later than 6pm). Then she is nursed to sleep between 7 and 7:30 pm.

  • I have no advice...but yes we are right there with you.  He use to sleep 10-4 and 4:30-7:30...now every 3 hours he eats.  Every once in a while he'll just nurse long enough to get back to sleep, but like your LO I never know when he is going to do this.

If it helps any, I also can't deny him a feeding.  I'm sooooo tired that I have considered CIO, but I just keep on going thinking he slept through the night before, he'll do it again.

Just in case you come back to this thread . . . I would do a solid for dinner.  We actually do lunch (veggie mixed with cereal and milk, plus a bottle) and dinner (just fruit), no solids at breakfast at all.  I also feed on demand in the evenings and she is nursed to sleep between 7:30 and 8:00.

Something else you can try that works for us--I dreamfeed her at around 10:00pm.  After that she STTN.  If I don't dreamfeed for whatever reason, she'll wake up to nurse between midnight and 2:30am.

    Good luck!

  • We were going through the same thing (except he's on formula now).  When I went to the 6 month appointment, the pedi asked about his sleeping and she confirmed what I already knew- he doesn't need that many bottles at night.  She said that since he's a big boy, he may continue to need 1 bottle but that he definately doesn't need more than that.  I think I just needed to hear it from her.  We immediately worked to cut out those feedings (at this point we used CIO but had previously implemented ideas from NCSS which helped a bit as well).
