Babies: 9 - 12 Months

BF mommas with 11 mo old - how many oz?

We are planning to travel to a wedding when DS is 11 mo old.  He'll stay at MILs for 3-4 days and I'm trying to figure out how much breast milk I'll need to have in the freezer.  How much does you LO drink each day.  I'm hoping we can successfully make this happen, as I don't want to supplement unless critically necessary.  Thanks so much!

  • I'd plan on about 30 oz a day to be safe.

Freeze in 4-6oz portions and make sure you MIL knows how to keep it so it stays good.

Crap, that's a lot.  I was hoping it would be less since DS would be eating a good bit of solids then.

Thanks for the info..guess I'll be pumping from now until May :(

well it is a lot, but you said you didn't want to supplement unless necessary so I went high.

Really it will likely be closer to 24ish, maybe 18-24, it really depends on the kiddo. My DD eats 3 meals a day of solids and still probably gets roughly 20oz ish of BM ( I mostly nurse so it's hard to guesstimate)

  • I can tell you what Z gets. He gets two 8oz bottles while with my mom. He eats from me around 6ish and then is down for bed. He then wakes up about 4-5am to eat again. If we average 8oz each time he eats from me (give or take) that would be 24oz a day.

Like Ctri said, I would leave 30 a day to be safe. Sometimes they may want to feed more than not. Do you plan on BF past a year? If not, is there any way you can move your vacation back?

ETA: I guess you can't just go moving around other peoples weddings. Disregard the last statement.

  • DD still nurses about 5 times in a 24-hr period. I mostly nurse (not bottles), but I'd say she gets about 4-5 oz. each time. So, that's at least 20 oz. a day. I'd say PPs estimates are accurate.

  • DS takes two 5-6 ounce bottles when I'm at work and nurses twice while I'm at home. So probably takes in about 24 ounces.
  • My DS takes three 6 oz bottles while I'm at work (from 8 am - 5 pm).  He nurses before bed and once or twice in the morning.  So he would need between 30 and 36 oz a day, since he sometimes will nurse at like 4 am and then again at 6 am and then after breakfast at like 9 am.

  • Thanks so much ladies, I guess I'll get pumping!
  • I know you didn't ask this part, but I would recommend figuring out how many oz you need to pump per day and make a tracking system. If you use microsoft excel I recommend that. I had to leave dd for a week when she was 6.5 weeks old. I pumped everyday and tracked how much I got. My body got used to getting that amount so it wasn't like I was trying to over produce the week before just to cut back down. It also helped that I didn't have to keep counting how much I had. Good luck! I was able to pump 214 oz in 6 weeks (only needed 5 oz of formula). It is doable!
