Hi and question for teachers

Hello! I'm new here! My DH and I are expecting our first child together this June. I currently teach middle school English in TX. I plan on asking my benefits administrator this, but since I have STD, can I elect to use it in the fall when I am scheduled to return to work? If my baby is born on his/her due date (june 8th), I will have exactly two months off for summer vacation. However, I have a feeling I will not want to return to work immediately. I'm teaching a class at a community college to put $$ in savings, in case I don't want to go back immediately. However, I'd rather keep that money in savings for other baby expenses. Any insight into STD?

  • disability is to cover you for when you are disabled, which is 6 weeks for a normal birth or 8 for a c section.  You can't choose to use it when ever you want.  I'm a teacher too and we have to use our sick days, but I could still only get paid for 6 weeks worth of sick days, after that I took unpaid time since I was no longer disabled, they no longer pay

  • HI I'm a school counselor in Plano and I was completely shocked to find out how ours and many other school districts will work maternity leave. Plano ISD will make you use all your sick days, all your personal days as well as your state leave days before paying out any maternity leave as well as any STD. The mat. leave is minimal and they only will pay 6 weeks worth. Since I had a summer baby(july) I really did not qualify for any paid time when I was out.

Short Term Disability is for when you might be put on bed rest during the pregancy or unable to work. It also might qualify for 6 weeks after the birth.

I am pretty sure since you are due in June that there will not be any paid days for you to use, unless your school district has paid Family Medical Leave Act. (which many do not). We were completely shocked to find out how our school district basically penalizes you for having a summer baby, during your time off.

Ask your district about their policy for Family Medical Leave Act because that is what most maternity leave is falling under.

  • Oh wow! I teach in Richardson ISD. I think ours is a little different than PISD. We only use our days if you didn't sign up for and pay into STD. Our moms who sign up for STD get 10 weeks  at 60% pay plus whatever days you choose to use. Since my baby is due in the summer and I won't need STD, I wanted to see if I could use it in the fall.
