Help! I WANT queso!

I read we can't have Mexican cheese dip, because it might be unpasteruized. I thought that was illegal in the U.S. plus it's cooked! Can we not have it? I REALLY WANT SOME! Thanks.

  • I don't know if its good for us or not but, that is all that i craved for a long time. So, I ate it. didn't even think about it being unpasteurized.... oh well. It was delicious!

  • I've never heard of no Mexican cheese dip. You do know that doesn't count as a 'soft cheese', right? Go eat some cheese dip, you're fine.

  • Queso dip is fine. 

    1st pregnancy: m/c began 1/12/09 d&c 1/13/09 8wks. Baby stopped growing at about 6wks.

    Delaney: Born 10/15/09

    Gavin: Born 4/8/11

    Baby #3: due July 10, 2014

  • You can eat almost any cheese. I eat goat's cheese, which is a 'soft cheese', I just make sure its pasturized. Almost anything you buy in a grocery store in the US is pasturized.

    I feel like I'm on 1st tri again...

OP could be like me and did not join the boards till after she was in her 2nd tri. therefore, she didnt read the 1rst trimester boards...OMG...is that possible?!?!? someone on here didnt read the 1rst trimester boards before going into the 2nd trimester board?! geez, get a life and help a girl out. she had a legit question, dont be an @ss.

    I don't think you deserve to indulge your cravings if you can't figure out what "unpasteurized cheese" is and isn't.

    You are both very stupid. If OP really is that concerned about whether queso is safe to eat, she should be asking her doctor for advice, not a message board full of random strangers.

  • Just make a makeshift queso:  velveeta and rotel mix. I used to work at OTB, they used LOL unsliced american, tomatoes, jalapenos, and spices.

  • Queso blanco = yummy but often imported and non-pasturized cheese from Mexico.

    Queso dip = yummy but most likely not made from anything that ever resembled real cheese, pasturized anyway, and therefore totally safe

    There are a bajillion resources online that will explain what is "safe" and what isn't. Not to mention your doctor, who would know better than anyone.

  • Mexican queso dip is made with american pepper jack cheese, which can barely even be considered food. It's pastuerized. Eat the damn cheese.

    FTR I've eaten it about 455,672 times in the last four months, and while my waistline may not be appreciative, my non-listeria stricken stomach has thoroughly enjoyed every bite.

    1. go to store
    2. go to nachos aisle
    3. pick up jar of queso
    4. read the label
    5. realize that it isn't even real cheese
    6. eat and enjoy (right in the store.)
  • Wow. It really depends on your queso! REAL Mexican and border queso IS in fact made with queso blanco, and is a soft cheese that if imported from Mexico could be unpasteurized. REAL queso is never made with velveeta or any flavor of "american" cheese. Gross.

    Queso in a jar is about as good as cheese whiz or dip they put on nachos in stadiums. Equally gross. However, if you are craving queso and need to avoid the "real" queso because of the unpasteurized cheese, the Velveeta PASTEURIZED cheese product is a tolerable substitute.

  • I have had queso about 15 times since I got pregnant. I've had the gross, cheap kind and more authentic kind. I do try and stay away from queso blanco, but I really do love a good queso con carne! 

    Olive - I'm not going to lie.. Chuy's queso compuesto AND the queso at maudie's (with meat) are my favorites. Those are probably closer to 'fake' queso though, right?

  • I am laughing at how anyone could think that potentially unpasturized real cheese made from milk could be less healthy than processed cheese product made from ???

  • I love the queso from On the Border, it's pasteurized. If you go out to eat, ask the waitress if it is.
