So in a recent turn of events, DH and I have decided we'll probably be bringing LO home to our current apartment for at least a couple months, rather than trying to scramble and buy a house before she gets here. It's just too stressful and we don't want to rush and end up unhappy.
Anywho, I am fully committed to CDing, and we have shared laundry here. It's in the building, on the same floor as us, and we only share with 4 other apartments, so I figure it's as good as it's going to get. At least it's not a laundromat.
I've been reading articles on how to make this work until we have our own laundry machines, and the only thing I haven't read about is residue build-up. Since other ppl use whatever detergents they want, won't there be leftover residue in the machine, and won't this harm my diapers? Is there a way to "clean out" the machine before I use it? Or is this a non-issue?
If it matters, we will be using prefolds and fitteds almost exclusively for the newborn stage. I plan on purchasing the GMD prefolds, and we have thirsties fab fitteds XS.

Re: CDing in apartment laundry machines?
I'm not sure what other people are going to tell you, but we don't use cloth diaper friendly detergent on our regular laundry. We use All Free & Clear. We haven't had any problems with it.
I'm using regular Tide on our cloth diapers, though, because I don't have to order it, and it gets good reviews for cloth from Jillian's Drawers. The only reason we don't use it as our regular detergent is that DH is allergic to it.
Oh right.... I kind of forgot that you wouldn't be using CD-friendly detergent on ALL of your clothes, so therefore even your own machine has different detergent in it. Duh.
So I guess it must not leave behind any residue then, or else everyone would be having issues. Okay, I feel dumb now. Nevermind!!
There's no need to feel dumb about it. There is a lot to think about with cloth diapers. There's a reason so many people use disposables- they're super easy and you don't have to think about them!
I'm definitely still learning.
I will tell you that I've really liked my prefold diapers and covers. I got Chinese prefolds in infant size and prorap covers (newborn size) and thirsties 2.0 covers (x-small) for my baby, since he still hasn't really fit into my BumGenius yet. I think I'm going to buy more of them to use when he's bigger.
I have just begun cloth diapering so I am no where near a pro, but I do know the one thing to be concerned with is the dryer. If you plan to dry your diapers, you can not use any fabric softener. There can also be fabric softener buildup in your dryer. I have heard a way to get the dryer clean, run a load of towels through it first. This should wipe the dryer out sufficiently.
I don't know how long you are planning to stay in the apartment, but they sell washers for about 200 that could go in your kitchen or bathroom. We were considering buying one when we weren't sure if we would be in our apartment still or in a house.
Hope this helps
