I think I probably already know the answer, but I figured I'd ask just to see what others have to say and what others experiences are. I have come to realize through many posts that effacement and dilation don't mean much as to when you will go into labor. However, do you typically dilate and efface simultaneously? Last week I found out at my doc visit that I was 80% effaced but not dilated at all. I didn't think to ask any questions about it while I was there but as I headed home I really started to wonder. Has anyone else nearly become fully effaced before dilating? Does this mean anything? Or are everyone's bodies just different and efface and dilate on their on schedule? Any insight or sharing similar/different experiences is appreciated. TIA!
Re: effacement and dilation ?
I am a first time mom and at my 39 week/5 day appt I was 1 cm dilated and 0% effaced.
I'm thinking that everyone is different.
My experience was this:
36w - 1cm dilated/50% effaced
37w - 2cm dilated/80% effaced
Then I went into labor at 37w6d
- showed up at 10:30 still 2cm/80%
- took a long morphine-induced nap and woke up at 6pm 3-4cm/80%
- checked again at 9pm - 6cm/80%
- 3am - 8cm/80%
- 5am - 9cm/80%
- checked at 7:30 and I was 10cm/100%
I have no idea why I was stalled out at 80% effacement, but I thought it would never progress...

I think this is my case. I've been 1cm dilated since 35 weeks, but now I'm almost 100% effaced. We'll see if I've dilated more at tomorrow's appointment.
1st baby: 2 cm and 75% effaced from 36 weeks until I was induced at 39 weeks.
2nd baby: 2 cm and 50% effaced at 35.5 weeks & 36.5 weeks
3 cm and 50% effaced at 37.5 weeks
Have my 38.5 week appointment tomorrow morning.
This is the only time you will catch all of us easily talking about what's going on up in there!
Love it..
at my 36 I was 90% effaced, 1 cm dilated.. and my fill in doc was assertive enough to suggest that there was no way I was going to make it to my due date!.. we'll see what the Thursday appt brings.. (37wk)..
wish there were timetable charts and averages we could look at for stufff like this..
