update: q about toddlers who no longer nap

woo hoo!  finally some success.  after not napping for 6 days (longest stretch ever) because he was just yelling "good nap" and opening the door (new skill) and running out of the room after 5 min.  i tried a whole variety of suggestions.

i let him have "quiet time" on the sofa and watch tv as long as he was laying down - worked for one day and then he just wanted to sit up and play.

i used a baby gate to block the door to his room.  he stood there and yelled "hi mama" for an hour and never slept.  which was ok with me, because i figured the next day he would probably know i meant business and would give in and nap.  but, i couldn't close the door with the gate in, so i didn't put it in at night and he woke me up the next morning by running into our bedroom and i freaked for safety reasons that i didn't want him running all over the house before we were awake.

finally (i don't know why i put off trying this-duh) i went and bought a freaking doorknob cover safety thing from bru.  he was really heated about the fact that he could no longer open the door, but after 45 min of protesting, took a 2+ hour nap yesterday.  today, i heard him get out of bed, try the door for about 30 seconds and then get back in bed and go to sleep 2+ hour nap again.

thanks for all of your suggestions.  i'm totally psyched that i didn't just decide he was done napping altogether.

yay, I think that was something I suggested.  If I didn't, that's what we did with DS.  I hope he goes to sleep for you tonight.  That's why we cut out naps.

  • unfortunately my oldest son figured out how to take off the doorknob cover, child proof my, well you know. so that only worked for about a week and we tried every style bru, walmart, and hardware stores sell non of them worked...we even thought about doing a lock on the outside of the boys door but that didn't help bc all they did was play and when i seperated them they still played...night time though they have no problem going to sleep so unfortunately we have cut out naptime. my boys are 2 and 4.
