Confession: Toys for E, and a question

I feel like I need a reason to buy E toys, such as a birthday or Christmas. Which is a silly thing because I am always buying her clothes just because they are cute, on sale, etc. E's birthday is in February so I feel like I am buying her presents for Christmas and her birthday all at once but the rest of the year, nothing. I know that DH would not mind if I bought her toys throughout the year, but for some reason I feel like I need a justifiable reason. Because of this, I kinda feel like E is behind on some stuff. She doesn't have a shape sorter and I want to get one for her bday but then I feel like I am buying it about a year late.

Anyone set up a wish list for their LOs on Amazon? I usually send out an email right before Christmas with E's wish list but I was thinking if I set up a wish list then I can add to it throughout the year and edit it as necessary. We have so many family members around the US it might make it easier.

Thanks for "listening."

  • I feel the same way, because DD's birthday is a week before Christmas. If I see a toy during the year that I think will help her developmentally, I'll get it. If it's just for fun, I won't buy it. She has so many toys right now we don't have space for anything more. I think as she gets older I'll use toys as more of a reward, so she's not getting things "just because" I wanted to buy it.

  • I wish I were mote like you. I'm constantly getting stuff for him. And he has a permanent amazon wishlist that I keep updated.
  • I agree. She has so many toys now, she doesn't need any more. She doesn't play with all she has. So I don't feel guilty about not buying more, but then I think about all the things she isn't doing or learning and I want to buy her the shape sorter, or the color game thingy.
  • I don't have an issue with buying my daughter toys for no reason, but my DH feels similar to you on the toy issue. He has a hard time with me buying our daughter a toy unless it's for some type of special occasion. However, my parents are constantly buying her little things and DH's mom is a constant thrift store shopper and so she buys her neat little toys on a regular basis. However, if I truly felt our daughter needed a specific type of toy, especially if it was for a developmental reason, I'd either buy it or let it slip to the grandparents that she needed that particular toy. I have a Christmas birthday and my parents were always pretty good about buying me items in the middle of the year if I really needed/wanted them.

  • I'm like you. I don't even buy toys for birthday and we gave him nothing for Christmas knowing he'd be spoiled by other relatives. In November I looked around and realized his most recent toys were from his first bday! So DH and I went to a local consignment store and got several cool things for super cheap.  So check those out and maybe you can find something affordable and educational.

This sounds like me. I need to take a page out of your book and stop buying DD so much!

  • We just buy DS toys whenever we feel like he should have them, honestly. At around 9 months, he was bored of EVERYTHING we had for him, so we went out and got him some new stuff that reflected his interests at the time. I would say we do that every 3-4 months or so. In November he was really interested in zipping, putting things in pockets, doing up buckles, etc, so we got him one of those Dress Me dolls, despite the fact that Christmas was only a month away.
