probiotics question

The Dr. suggested that I get some probiotics for my DD to help with reoccuring diarrhea from a bout of the stomach flu. He said yogurt or a supplement. All I really know of is like Activia. Any suggestions? I'm thinking yogurt would be the best, but I'm not sure if they make special ones for kids.

Re: probiotics question

  • almost all yogurt contain probiotics. just for the live enzymes - they have long names on the side of the yogurt. i buy organic whole milk plain yogurt and it has them in it.

  • Thsi was before LO could eat yogurt but our Pedi suggested getting florastor which is a child's probiotic pill. I would break is open and dump the powder into a bottle. It really helped her.

  • DS can't eat yogurt (milk allergy), so we use Florastor when he's on antibiotics.  We get the Florastor Kids (pink and white box, usually kept behind the pharmacy counter here), which are packets of powder that we can mix into his food.  It really helps.
  • I think probiotics are wonderful!  We used Culturelle (supplement in powder form) for DD when she was an infant--we just put it in her milk once a day.  It always kept her regular and I believe it helped her with her reflux, which is why pedi recommended it.

Now, we give her yogurt in pouches that they sell at Whole Foods.  I can't remember the brand name but it's the only kind that is sold in pouches so you can't miss it, if you shop at Whole Foods.

Our Pedi recomended this in addition to yogurt and said it was a better sourse than relying on yogurt and we add it to his milk whenever he is on Antibiotics. Works Great. Had to ask our CVS to order the for kids one they only had the adult instore but they had it the next day.

  • If you have a Whole Foods, go and ask someone for help.  They are super knowledgable.  They will be able to steer you in the right direction.  They will tell you how much your child should be getting and everything.  I have been giving my son probiotics for a long time, and will continue to do so for a long time!

  • We started giving DD probiotic supplements when she was on antibiotics for the first time. We went to the Vitamin Shoppe and they were really helpful. We got a powder that we mix into her milk. We did it about every 3-4 hours when she was on antibiotics (per the directions) and we now give it to her just in the morning and evening. I think we'll continue it since it seems to help her tummy.

  • DD gets probiotics every day. Florastor and Culturelle for kids, just mixed in with her soy yogurt or applesauce. I would check out the Yo Baby Yogurt Stoneyfield makes.
