NBR: Personalized License Plate question

Over the weekend, we sold my car to Car Max and bought a new one from them.  My old car has personalized plates that I want to transfer over to our new car but that car already has plates.  I'm hoping I don't have to actually walk into a DMV office and do it there and instead, can just it online or by mail.  Has anyone done this before, transferred personalized plates?

    sadly you have to go to the DMV. i got personalized plates after i got my car that had existing plates and when the personalized ones came in, i had to go to the DMV and have them swap out the existing plate for the personalized one.
