Infertility

Would you take a new job right before doing an IVF cycle?

I have been offered a new job that I am actually really excited about-with an entirely different company than I am currently at. It is not more $, but much better hours and it would be so much less stressful for me so when we have kids it would be so much easier for me to do my job, go home and not worry about it.

I would likely start the 3rd week in January. However, with my DE IVF we are looking at a mid Feb. ER/ET. I already asked the HR lady I spoke to about this and she said it would be fine but those days would be unpaid-which is fine with me/DH. I guess I am just concerned about starting this job, taking those days off, then if (hopefully!) it all works out I am all of the sudden pregnant right after starting. WWYD?

Re: Would you take a new job right before doing an IVF cycle?

  • I would (and congrats!!). As long as you're up front about your time-off needs and they are aware, then it should have no bearing. Good luck!

  • I would, absolutely!  No sense in putting your life on hold just in case, go for it!  Congrats on the new job!

  • How would maternity leave be impacted? I know for a friend, she only had access to the 6 weeks after giving birth when she changed jobs.  It's important for me to have the 3 months off, so I personally wouldn't switch jobs.  But that might not be important for others.

It is really important to me too. But I can't really ask about it.....However, I figured with that we will just have to cross that bridge when we get there. If there is a way I can do the full 10-12 unpaid even I would do that. But I would not have been there quite a year by the time the baby/babies would be here if this IVF works.

  • Congratulations on the job offer. I would change jobs. It sounds like a great opportunity and would be much better in the long run.  As long as they know your time off needs ahead of time, I think it would be fine.  Good luck with your decision!

  • If the job is going to be less stress and make your life easier - I think its reasonable. I'm doing a DE IVF cycle now and compared to the regular IVF cycle it's much less time away from work. I just go in for one lining check and the ET.  I hope both the job and the IVF work out for you!

(This is just my opinion)  You wouldn't have access to FMLA (being there less than a year) and if you had to be on bedrest or whatever else your job wouldn't be guarenteed if you were out for longer than whatever your sick days or vacation would cover.  Again, for some people that's not a big deal and they can handle that-but I know for me personally that added stress would push me over the top.  Especially knowing the possibility of twins if I were to transfer two.

If you are okay with whatever could happen when you cross that bridge and have thought about all the different possibilities-then I say go for it.  Good luck-I know it's not an easy choice!!!!

  • ABSOLUTELY!

I hate my job so much and it is so stressful and demanding and I work ridiculously long hours often so if I had a chance to get out for something I enjoyed that was similar in pay, I'd do it in a heart beat.

    Good luck and I'm jealous!

  • Congrats on the job! I would definitely take it and like peeps said, if you are upfront about everything it shouldn't be an issue!

  • Normally, I would think that this is all a bit much to handle at once, but if you are really excited about the job, go for it!!  A great job doesn't come along everyday and sometimes you just have to jump!

  • If it's a better situation than what you have right now, take it!

Although I hope this is it for you, but as an infertile, you already know you can't really plan pregnancy.  I switched jobs just before I started to see an RE & also worried about FMLA time if I got pregnant right away.  Well, here I still am 22 months later!

  • When I read the title of your post, I was thinking No, due to FMLA considerations.
But then when I read about the better hours, less stress etc, I think that is such an important factor that you should absolutely go for it!

    Congratulations!!

  • I would, but make sure you have an agreement about FMLA leave.  Technically, your employer can deny FMLA leave if you have not been on the job for 1year.

Congrats on the new job and GL with your transfer!!

  • When I first read your subject line I was ready to scream, "NOOOOOO!"

I started a brand new teaching job (high stress, horrible hours) in a new district this year.  I would have NEVER taken the job if I realized I'd be doing IVF when I started it.

HOWEVER, in your situation it seems like it will be EASIER at the new job--so why not?

  • I actually did- I started my new job in the middle of September and did my first IVF in October. It was the best decision ever- they were so understanding even as a brand new employee than my previous employer ever was  It was much less stressful for me going through the IVF. My boss's philosophy is that family comes first and you shouldn't have to put your life on hold. Thank goodness for her. Best of luck with whatever you decide to do.

  • Thanks everyone! It freaks me out about the whole no FMLA and maternity leave thing, but I just can not turn it down! I think that just the fact the job in general would be so much less stressful could only be good! I work twice a week until 8 pm right now and with this new job I would be off every day by 4:30!
