Eczema help

During the winter months, we've always had to slather Geneva in Aquaphor because she'd get tiny rough patches on her back and stomach. They're not scaly or flaky - just rough, like fine-grit sandpaper. Pedi tells us it's mild eczema. The Aquaphor typically takes care of it.

Now, she has two tiny crusty spots on her scalp. They don't bother her, but I'd like to take care of them. They kinda look like cradle cap, so I'm assuming it's the eczema. What can I use to treat them? Should I dab a little Selsun Blue or T-Sal shampoo on them? We already only wash her hair every other day to keep things from drying out. And I don't want her having to walk around with olive oil all over her head.

Any suggestions for treating the spots?

Re: Eczema help

  • Aveeno makes an eczema lotion that usually clears spots like that for us. It's in the adult section, not in the children's section.  I think the main ingredient is colloidal oatmeal, so if you can't find Aveeno, find something with colloidal oatmeal.

  • Myra--both of my kids have the exact issue.  Mild eczema like you are describing.  They also now have the cradle cap spots on their head.  What has helped us is to put baby oil on their head right before we shampoo and then brush the flakes out with a baby brush.  If the flakes hadn't gone away, I had researched that the neutrogena shampoo (T-gel) works well ongoing. Also, cut back on shampooing.  We do every other day and I had to stop using Aveeno shampoo and conditioner. We use the aquaphor baby wash and shampoo. It seems to be gentler.
  • Cadence had that for the longest time on her scalp. She also gets mild ecxema spots on her cheeks that the Aquaphor takes care of. For the scalp though, I switched to Burt's Bee's baby shampoo and still use it. For us, that cleared it up.

  • Lily has the same problem.  Aquaphor on her body and for her hair it's selsun blue.  If it is really bad, I use apricot oil (Burts bees baby oil) and let it sit while in the bath.  Then I wash with selsun blue.  We only use dove soap.  My skin is insanely sensitive.

  • Max had the scaly scalp over the summer (weird time of year for that to happen I know) but we slathered his head in olive oil, let it sit for a 1/2 hour then washed it out.  Fixed it right up!

We've been using the Burt's Bees Baby Shampoo. I switched to it after the Method Baby Shampoo really dried her scalp out.

For her regular soap, the pedi recommended Dove liquid body wash (Sensitive). That helps a lot. Apparently, most natural body products don't contain emollients (which help lubricate the skin, etc.). The Method shampoo we'd been using was an all-in-one body wash/shampoo and it was drying her out all over.

I didn't think about putting the oil on before I washed. That might work. I could rub it on the spot as we're getting the bath ready and then wash it out.
