Beco owners: Gemini vs. Butterfly 2?

We're still using our Ergo often for DS, so I'm looking into getting a second carrier for the new baby and thinking about a Beco. The models look fairly similar...and the online reviews/comparisons haven't helped me figure out which one would be better for us.

If you have a Beco, which model did you choose and why? Pros? Cons? TIA!

Re: Beco owners: Gemini vs. Butterfly 2?

  • I love my Gemini. I picked it because it can do so many different carries, also a front facing carry which DD liked for a while (before she got too heavy). I don't really see the point the piece of fabric between you and the baby, I find it more snuggly with her just up against me. I recently went to the back carry on occasion (not sure if the butterfly does this) and it is really good for that too.

  • I got the Gemini.  Haven't used it yet but I wanted one that did a forward-facing carry.  I got it mostly for DH because he had said several times that he wanted a Baby Bjorn when baby comes along and hearing all the negatives of the Bjorn I wanted to get one that did basically the same thing but better for baby.  And now he gets the added bonus of the back carry!

I'll be getting a wrap or two for myself, but I'm sure I'll use the Beco occasionally.

  • Unlike the pp, I like the piece of fabric between LO and myself in the BBII.  It acts as a sweat barrier (gross I know but we do live in Orlando) and it allows me to just undo him and hand him off to DH or another family member without taking him out of the carrier.

My family was in town this past week and we were at the outlets shopping.  I wanted to try some clothing on so I undid DS and strapped him on my sister. All while he was asleep.  With the Gemini you can't do this.

I also don't like the idea of a facing forward carry.  Part of the attraction to the Beco was that DS could look around if he wanted and could lay his head down and go to sleep when he wanted. Sometimes when we are out DS will fall asleep without me even noticing.  I'll just look down and see that he's out.  With the Gemini when they act tired, you'd have to turn him instead of LO just dosing off when they wanted.

  • BTW, you can look up videos on YouTube of the two carriers being compared.  They were helpful when I had to make the decision.  Just search Beco Gemini vs Beco Butterfly II.

  • I tried both of them and they are definitely different.  I liked that you could do more moves with the Gemini and cross the straps in the back.  The BBII won out though.  It fit my frame better (I'm really short), I liked that it wasn't padded (too hot, bulky), and the infant insert/internal harness really makes things easy to get a perfect fit.  I love doing back carries with it, and that is basically all I use it for.  If you can try them both (like a trial with Pax Baby) that really is the way to go.  I bet one will just feel right to you.

I don't mean to be snarky but this is not an argument for *not* choosing the Gemini. Obviously it is the parent's responsibility to be aware when LO is sleepy or not in the mood for FF and then use the inwards carry. Just because you can FF doesn't mean you have to use it... It worked wonders for me for about 2 months on occasion (say 3 times per week) when DD wanted to see out and when I needed to sit down with her (before her legs got long enough for me to sit down in the regular hold).
