Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Anyone doing Gymboree classes?

So I found a Gymboree place 10 minutes away and signed us up for the free trial play and learn and music class. Anyone did/doing either? It seems pricey but if it's worth it I would like something to get us both out of the house. How was your experience?

  • I love it and so does Matthew. He get so excited when we are walking from the car to the class. I would suggest you buy the Bubble Ooodles. They are made from sugar, last forever when you blow them and the kids love it.

  • My DD was in it for 2 years, and my DS has been in it for about 6 months. My DD was also in art there.  I really liked taking my kids...in the city it was a necessity to get out of the condo, especially in the winter.  The nice thing about the 3 Chicago locations was that they were all owned by the same person so we could utilize the open gym from all the locations and go every day of the week if we wanted.

Now that we're in the suburbs, we switched Gymbos.  My DH and I aren't that impressed with the one closest to us.  It's actually a smaller space than the city one and we just don't think the teachers are that good.  If we had nothing to compare it to I'm sure we'd think it was just fine though.

We are actually going to cancel the membership soon, because we've got other activities for my DS...swimming at the Y, etc.  I personally always preferred Gymbo to Little gym though, mostly for the open gym options.

Which suburban location, if you don't mind me asking?

  • i think ds was too young when i tried the first time. i think he was maybe 6 months? we did the free class but i felt like he was too young to get anything out of it.

plus, the city does them cheaper so we did that over the summer.

  • We LOVE it! We signed up using a Groupon, so that saved us a bit of money. I think it's a bit pricey, but really worth it to me. Especially for her age. I haven't found other activities for her age for cheaper. And, I've met a new Mommy-friend, which is awesome. I truly look forward to going each week!
  • I've done Kindermusik with all three of my kids from about 5 or 6 months through 18 months (when they started MDO).  DS is in it now and love love loves it.  The girls did too.  I think it's a bit cheaper than Gymboree, but I'm thinking about trying out a Gymboree class just to see what the difference is.  Still, DS always loves our Kindermusik and I'm hesitant to quit that with how much he loves it and how much I love our teacher (same teacher I've had for all three kids).  Anyway, something else to look into and try.  I know Kindermusik also offers a free class if you're thinking about trying them.

Gymbo is the mascot for gymboree play and learn. Little Gym and My Gym are similar to Gymboree but take more of a gymnastic approach.

Old Orchard.  Northbrook Court is owned by the same person and we've gone to open gym and one makeup there.  It's a little better.  It's just the teachers...we were so spoiled at the Lakeview location!

    What's Gymbo and little gym?

I was just saying Gymbo short for Gymboree.

Little Gym is another place similar to Gymboree.  It just has a slightly different approach and is more gymnastic/strength based which I like for my DD's age and a bit older, but not for the young babies.

  • Definitely check out the Kindermusik.  Even DH said he would notice big jumps with the kids on Kindermusik days.  All three of mine have loved it but more than that they seem to see other kids/babies doing new things and just start.  It was like seeing other babies their age doing things like crawling, sitting and walking started them thinking about it.  DS was one of the oldest in his class this time around and it was a bit different, but he was always soooooooooooo excited when we even were just getting out of the car in the parking lot knowing where we were going.
  • i've been taking ds to gymboree since he was 6 1/2 months. i think that was a good age to start. we love it! it cost $70/month but once you've been w/them for i think it's 9 months the price lowers to $50 (or $55......i can't remember). we haven't gotten to the lower price but we're staying w/it as long as he enjoys it. he has such a great time there.
