wait it out, or ER?

DD was in the ER Tuesday with a 102 temp - everything checked out fine and doctor said it was just upper respiratory infection. Chest x-ray, etc. came back clear. She's been back and forth with 99 temp since then, but is also teething right now. 12:30pm today she went down for a nap and I had to wake her up at 5pm -- 103 temp. Motrin, bath, and dinner brought it down to 99.9. She went to sleep around 7pm, and woke up crying at 9pm. Temp back up to 103. I gave her tylenol, but temp is still lingering. She's sound asleep and I'm not sure if we should try to wait it out until the morning and let her sleep (obviously keeping a close eye on her), or drag her back to the ER.

  • Yes, I would wait it out and call the pedi in the am for  a recheck.

  • I would wait it out. Have you tried alternating Tylenol and Motrin?

  • I would wait until morning to see if her fever breaks but call the pedi anyway and let them know what was going on and see if you can take her in tomorrow to be seen

  • If this has been going on for 5 days, I personally would bring her back to the ER.  If the chest xray was clear, and they thought she had an infection did they put her on antibiotics?  You can also give both tylenol and motrin as well for the fever.  Good luck and I hope LO feels better soon.

This.  We dealt with this with DS twice in 3 weeks.  The first time was the flu AND strep. They gave him a penicillin shot and he was like a new kid. The second time, I didn't take him in, but he was not like he was the first time.

Alternate tylenol and motrin.  Keep her cool,  Maybe have her sleep in a onesie.  Cool washcloth on her forehead.

I forsee a long night for you.  Good luck and best wishes for a "not so sick" baby in the AM!

  • As long as you are able to continue bring her fever down, then I'd wait it out till the morning. If Tylenol/Motrin isn't bringing down her fever, then it's probably safest to head to the ER. Keep a close eye on her and head to the doctor first thing in the morning.

  • Poor baby. I would keep a close eye on her tonight and call the pedi first thing in the morning.

  • Wait it out.  Alternate Tylenol and Motrin every 4 hours but if the fever gets past 104 then I would take her to the ER.

  • Thanks - I'm just so paranoid, she has never had a temp above 101 until this week, and we have a little guy in the house who I don't want to get sick. UGH! I hate this time of year and all the germs that come along! Hopefully she wakes up feeling better in the morning.

For pp - with upper respiratory infection we didn't get any antibiotics, just cough medicine and tylenol/motrin dosing to treat fever. Two weeks before DD had a sinus infection, and had just finished up her antibiotics... doc checked her out and said ears, nose, and throat looked good.

  • By the sounds of it your gut says stay home  ( drag her to the ER )  I agree stay home for the night, I took my little guy to the ER in the night once and we were there til 6:30am and he would have been better off sleeping in his own bed away from all the other sickies.

Maybe if it gets back up to 103 again don't give her meds and take her right away that way they can see her sick and they will give her something there.

    Good Luck
