Spelling question and middle name poll

Lucie

How do you feel about this spelling?  We are set on the name itself and we don't care for the more formal versions of the name.  The reason for the spelling is that DD1 is Lily Sophia and we are trying to keep them from looking so similar. FWIW DS is Cameron Michael.

As far as the middle name we are definitely open to other suggestions.  TIA

Re: Spelling question and middle name poll

  • I prefer the spelling as Lucy. With that being said, I don't think your spelling is annoying like some of the other alternative spellings I see....LOL. I think it's still cute and it "works."

  • The spelling changes the pronunciation for me. I want to pronounce Lucie as "lu-SEE" and not "LU-see". Lucie/Lucy Violet gets my vote.

Lily and Lucy are still going to sound a little similar and spelling it Lucie doesn't make a difference to me (except that in my mind, it changes the sound) for making them look less alike. I also prefer the look of Lucy, it looks more balanced to me.

My name is Lucia and I go by Lucy- it's a great name!

  • Its not that bad, but I prefer Lucy. I dont get the logic in the 'ie' making them less similar. They still sound a lot alike, and spelling them differently doesn't make a big difference IMO. I like Lucy/Lucie Violet best.

  • I actually love the name Lucia (either pronunciation) but our last name is VERY german so anything that sounds anything but german sounds odd when paired up.

  • Lucy, for sure. Lucie is listed as a legitimate alternate to Lucy on babynames.com, but it still looks "made up" to me.

Either middle name works with Lucy, but I voted for Violet.

ie/y make the same sound, they don't change pronunciation in English.

They do make the same sound (which is why I spelled both pronunciations with "ee" for 'y' and 'ie') but the stress changes for me. I never said everyone will see it that way, but for me (bilingual in French and English), the pronunciation is different.

Actually, Lucia and Lucie are both used in Germany pretty commonly. Quite a lot of my family lives in Germany and I know two little girls named Lucia and four or five girls/woman named Lucy or Lucie. I even know two Luzies.

I know you chose the Lucie spelling for a specific reason, but for all those that want to argue you should use Lucy, I have to say that Lucie makes more sense to me when paired with a German surname. It's actually the traditional Czech variant of Lucy (though it would have a slightly different pronunciation there and in Germany than Lucy does here) and it's quite common in Germany. The only problem I have with it is that here in the States, she'll have to correct the spelling all the time, "It's Lucie with an I-E, not a Y," will become a popular refrain in your house.

  • Lucie is weird looking to me.  I understand why you want to use it but I would just go with the popular spelling.

  • She'll forever be correcting people. Just go with Lucy. I like Lucy Violet! Cute!
  • I love Lucy Violet

I'm not a huge fan of the look of "Lucie"

  • Lucie is also the French spelling.

My mom uses Lucie (short for Lucille).  Be prepared that she'll be correcting people for the rest of her life
