talk to me if you went into labor on your own

I woke up at 5 a.m. with contrax, and they've been on and off all day. They pick up in a pattern and then just stop. I have pelvic pressure and menstrual like cramping.

When my OB's office was supposed to open this morning (8:30 a.m.) I called and found out they're closed for the holiday, so I hung up and decided to ride it out. By 1:30 I was still contracting and cramping, so I called the on-call doc.

He said I'm gearing up and my body is getting ready and to call him back if my contrax are more patterned 5-10 mins apart.

So of course now I'm all excited and anxious. I feel like this could go on for days though. If you went into labor on your own, how quickly did you go from random contractions to something with a definite pattern?

I'll be so sad if I make it to my regularly scheduled appointment on Wednesday!

Re: talk to me if you went into labor on your own

  • I didn't even realize I was contracting- I went in for my appt and was dialated to 5cm.  I went to the hospital at noon and the boys were here by midnight so my guess is you may be having New Years babies!!!!!!

  • I had contractions on and off starting right around 37w. Sometimes they would be fairly regular for about an hour but then peter out again. I never went into active labor on my own; made it to my scheduled induction at 37w6d.

Hopefully you can last a few more days and make it to full-term!

  • I had a c as you know, but SQUEE...... I am SO excited for you!!!! LOVE ya!!

ETA: I have to add that my contrax did end me up in the hospital at 36 weeks 5 days, but my cervix was not progressing and since I was having a scheduled c a week later, we just went for it. My contrax were more regular and it was not on-off.

  • I had regular contractions that would be 5-10 minutes apart and then stop, for two weeks before my water broke. It was incredibly frustrating.

  • Once I fely contrax throughout the day I was pretty much ready to deliver. I had contrax from 20w on but only a few that I could feel. At the end I could feel almost all of them. Even after starting pitocin my contrax were never super regular. They were like once every 3 min, then 1 min, thenback to 3, etc. Before being induced they were like 6 per hour and not painful at all. GL!!!!! I'm excited for you!
  • this doesn't really help but I've been having the same "symptoms" for a week now, even contractions as close to 2-3 minutes apart for HOURS!  I was last checked Monday and still 2cm dilated and 75% effaced, and not in active labor!  It's really annoying but for me I'm not even 35 weeks yet so I'm hoping to last a couple more weeks.

     Good luck to you!!

  • I had bad period like crampiness for about a week before I went into labor on my own. One evening I was lying down watching tv and I felt a gush of water. My water broke and then within a half hour of getting to the hospital they started getting more regular... the pressure like contractions I felt went on through the evening until they are about a minute apart it seemed. Then the doctor told me I was dialated to 5 cm. Then it was csecion time for me! I had one scheduled but since I went into labor early and had just eaten a big dinner they had me contract throught the night.
  • Only had PTL with twins.  I did go into labor naturally with DS1.  At 5:00am I woke having to pee.  Lost my MP (all at once), and contractions started immediately.  Went back to bed (figured they would stop b/c I'd read so many posts of "false labor").  Water broke (trickle) sometime between 5:00am and 9:00am.  Took a shower "just in case".  Contractions were all over the board, but generally around 7 minutes apart.  Went out shopping with my mom b/c I didn't believe that my water had broken (was in such denial).  Around 12:30 we went to Panera and I had 2 bad contractions.  Decided to go to the hospital.  Pitocin around 3:00 to regulate contractions and DS1 was born at 10:53pm.  GL to you.
  • I contracted so much for the last couple weeks.  Didn't know I was actually in labor until my water broke at 3am at 37w3d.  GL!
  • I woke up at 1am to pee and my water broke with a pop and a gush on the toilet....

but I know lots of friends who have started like you described, and many of them had contractions like that come and go for a while.  One of them said her midwife suggested a glass of wine and a warm bath to slow it down.  If it was the real thing, it would usually keep going.  If it was just going to be annoying forever, it would stop it/lessen the intensity. Definitely sounds like things are happening.  Come on 2010!

  • this has seriously been so annoying! I go through a nice long spell where the contractions start to get closer, we get to like 15 mins apart and then done. Bah. Come on babies, come OUT.

    I'm so excited and anxious.

  • I didn't go into labor with DS1 and he was born via c-section 3 days shy of 40wks.  I started having contrax with the twins about a full week before they were born, so apx 34wks, but I didn't know it yet and it really felt like really bad period cramps.  Towards the end of the week, the contrax were getting closer, about every few hours instead of every 8-10 hrs or so.....and then closer and closer.  The night of the 29th, I felt awful, like I had the flu or something, felt just really bad and couldn't eat, I hurt everywhere.  The next morning, my contrax got worse, about 15-20 minutes apart and that's when I decided to call my OB, went in, she said I was about 3cm and to go straight to the hospital for some tests.  I was upset because I wanted the babies to cook much more.  As the hospital nurses were running all sorts of tests, they decided I was in fact in labor and I asked if they could stop it, they said I was too far along with the contrax (byt then they were 3-5 minutes apart) and that the babies were very good in terms of "weeks".  I stayed the entire night in the hospital with 2 minute contrax.  I was miserable.  My doc came in the next morning (she was not on call the night before) and the babies were born!  :o)
