talk to me about local midwifes and/or doulas...

I am not pregnant yet but I wanted to get a head start on researching.

Did you have a natural birth?

Did you use a midwife or doula?  If so, who did you use?

Hospital, birthing center, or home birth?  If hospital/birthing center, where did you go?

 Thanks for the info :)

Did you have a natural birth?  Yes, in the sense of I did not have a c/s.  I did get an epi, but it failed.  So, basically yes I did have a natural birth, but did not intend to.

Did you use a midwife or doula?  If so, who did you use?  No, used my OB/GYN

Hospital, birthing center, or home birth?  If hospital/birthing center, where did you go?  Hospital - Novi Providence Park

     Thanks for the info :)

Did you have a natural birth?  Yes, kinda. I had to be induced because of low fluids when I was past due. After a long time we opted to get the epidural so that we could both get some rest, but like ballerina it failed. He was born vaginally and I didn't get any more help for pain after the failed epi.

Did you use a midwife or doula?  If so, who did you use?  I went with the midwives at Oakland Maccomb OBGYN. The one who was on call the day I was there was worthless though, and I seriously feel like a lot of went wrong was as a direct result of her being a moron. One of the doctors at the practice ended up stepping in to deliver DS, and I seriously don't know what I would have done without him. He's recently left the practice, and I followed him to his new one. I plan to deliver my future children (whenever that may be) with him. He was very supportive of patients 'having the birth experience they want.'

Hospital, birthing center, or home birth?  If hospital/birthing center, where did you go?  Troy Beaumont. They have some rooms with jacuzzi tubs for people who want to have med free deliveries. Cause things got messed up, I didn't get to use them...but hopefully next time!

     Thanks for the info :)

Did you have a natural birth? I wanted one but was induced because they thought I was going to have a 10 pounder. The pitocin contractions were horrible; I had a epidural that worked and was great.

Did you use a midwife or doula?  If so, who did you use? Doctor. I'm glad I did. My son got stuck and needed a forceps delivery.

Hospital, birthing center, or home birth?  If hospital/birthing center, where did you go? Troy Beaumont. Can't say enough good things. Loved my stay there!!! The nurses were amazing.

     Thanks for the info :)

  • K Baby-which doctor left at Oakland Macomb?  That is where I go.  I love them there.  I only saw the midwives at my 8 week appointment.  I knew I wanted a doctor to deliver.

    Dr. Valice.

I know other people have left to follow him as well. Cannot say enough good things about him. He is at a smaller practice now, which also really appeals to me. Oakland Macomb was just too big for the kind of personal attention I wanted.

  • KBaby-i fust checked their website to see who left. So sad.  I generally see Dr. Love or Dr. Morgan, but I like all of htem there.  I hope he's doing well.

Did you have a natural birth? Nope- had a failed induction with my first that led to a c/s.  The second one was a repeat c/s

Did you use a midwife or doula?  If so, who did you use? I went with doctors.  I've heard a few stories lately about people's experiences with a midwive and I'd be leary about going that route.  Of the half dozen people I know who've tried to go the midwife route, no one has actually had the midwife deliver them

Hospital, birthing center, or home birth?  If hospital/birthing center, where did you go? Troy Beuamont.  Loved it there.  Can't say enough good things about the nurses and all the staff

     Thanks for the info :)

I'm one of the people who left to follow him.  I really loved Oakland Macomb for my first pregnancy, but they are getting way too big and I could tell the difference this time around.  I don't have a problem with large practices, but they haven't really added enough doctors to cover their patient load, especially considering they have 2 offices.  I had been considering switching to a smaller practice anyhow so it worked great to follow him.

Did you have a natural birth?  I was induced because I went a while without having any contractions after my water broke.  I did not have an epi though.

Did you use a midwife or doula?  If so, who did you use?   I used a midwife, Jan McIntosh, out of Henry Ford West Bloomfield.  She is absolutely amazing and I can't say enough good things about her.  She is supportive and informative through the whole process.  The only downside of this practice is that she was not the midwife who actually delivered my baby.  Whichever of the five midwives that is on call that day delivers.  I did meet most of the midwives beforehand and liked them all.  But I would go with Jan for my next baby too.

Hospital, birthing center, or home birth?  If hospital/birthing center, where did you go?  HFWB.  My experience was great.  The nurses were so helpful.  I did use the tub to help relax when the contractions got bad.  The spa also sent up aromatherapists and did a foot massage the next day.  And the food is awesome!   The only negative I have to say was with the OB/GYN who did my son's circumcision.  She was very rushed and made me feel uncomfortable.

     Thanks for the info :)

Did you have a natural birth?  No.  I studied Hypnobabies and went many hours before finally giving into an epidural.  Back labor is AWFUL.

Did you use a midwife or doula?  If so, who did you use?  For the birth of DS, I went with the CNMs at HFWB.  My primary was Lynn Rife, but I ended up seeing 5 of the 6 during my very long labor!  Without them, I doubt I would have ended up getting my VBAC.

Hospital, birthing center, or home birth?  If hospital/birthing center, where did you go?  DD was born at Oakwood which is a fine hospital for a cookie cutter labor/birth which I didn't end up having.  DS was born at HFWB and it was a pretty amazing experience.

     Thanks for the info :)

  • i had a home birth with Goldie Parker of A Mother's Touch Midwifery. She's based out of shelby twp but will go pretty much anywhere. i HIGHLY recommend both her and the home birth experience. the website is amotherstouchmidwifery, com, but it may be down. i can give you a # if you're interested.

Did you have a natural birth? Yes! I took Hypnobirthing classes while pregnant which really helped. I was in active labor for 28 hours.

Did you use a midwife or doula?  If so, who did you use? Midwife. Janice McIntosh at Henry Ford West Bloomfield. I cannot say enough great things about her. She is absolutely amazing. I switched to her at 30 weeks and actually hugged her after our first appointment.

Hospital, birthing center, or home birth?  If hospital/birthing center, where did you go? Henry Ford West Bloomfield. Loved, loved, loved it there. Wonderful staff, great midwives/doctors, great food (seriously), great sleeping accomodations for the dad (or anyone else you want to stay), no limit on 'visiting hours', no limit on the number of people in the room. I was told more than once, "You are here to give birth the way you want, we are just here to help that happen." Oh, and they having labor tubs! Wonderful!

     Thanks for the info :)
