Babies: 0 - 3 Months

how much formula?

so the last two times i was at the pediatrician the drs said baby should only be having 2.5-3oz every 3-4 hours. he was 7 weeks at the time and he was wanting 4oz every 3 hours. he is 10 weeks now and is still wanting 4oz every 3 hours. many people have told me to give him what he wants. he sleeps up to 11 hours at night so it seems reasonable that he gets what he needs during the day... works out to be around 24-28oz a day.

just wondering what others 10 week olds are drinking and how often.

Re: how much formula?

  • Hi!

We are 10 weeks too and is probably about 12 pounds now (at 8 weeks she was 11lbs) She is taking 6 ounces, every  3-4 or 4-5 hours during the day.and last night she lasted 8.5 for the first time.

Feeding is usually at 7 or 8 am, then 10:30/11:30 am, then early afternoon, then late afternoon, then bottle at bed time at 8/9pm, then bottle at 4:30... wash and repeat.

Our pedi said baby should eat about half their weight in ounces 12 pounds=6 ounces. LO finishes the bottle, so we are happy.

  • A guideline for this age is 18 - 32oz a day for any baby (regardless of weight).     This is from the Saskatchewan Health formula feeding pamphlet (it's reputable).
  • DS eats 6oz at each feeding and he usually gets up 3 or 4am then every 3 hrs after during the day so it would be 3, 6, 9,12,3,6 then I usually do another bottle of like 2 or 3 ounces at 7 or 7:30pm to hold him over most of the night.. or he will do 4am 7,10,1,4,then 7 for the night.. He is 8wks and over 12lbs
