Babies: 3 - 6 Months

How was your experience with Depo shot?

I was on the pill for about four years before I went off to TTC and I had no problem with remembering to take it. Now that I have LO I cannot remember to take it for the life of me! I'm worried about getting pregnant again and i'm on the generic of Yaz and now have spotting inbetween, extremely bad cramps and heavy periods which didn't happen before. I'm thinking of trying the depo shot because we might TTC as early as six months from now, or we may hold off depending on how things are going. What was your experience, such as weight gain, spotting, period heaviness, cramping and moodswings? Would you recommend it? How long did it take you to conceive after you went off, and how often do you have to get the shot? TIA.

Re: How was your experience with Depo shot?

  • I started getting it in college and continued for almost 4 years. I had no side effects at all, however, a girl in my class said it made her "crazy". My doctor made me go off it because they believe long term use can lead to osteoporosis. If I recall I had the shot every 3 months and only got a very, very light period if I got one at all. I loved it! I was off it for a few years before I conceived and was on the pill in between. Sounds like a good option for you.

  • HORRIBLE!  I got the shot at my 6 week pp visit ... I had just stopped my pp bleeding and I started bleeding again for 10 days.  It made me insanely moody, seriously, I nearly punched my husband a few times.  I thought I had PPD because I was all of a sudden crying all.the.time too.  I feel 100% better now that the shot has worn off though.

We are just using condoms now until DH gets snipped.  If I were you, I would come up with some kind of system to help you remember to take the pill like setting an alarm or something.

  • I've loved it.  Only need to get it every 3 months (although the OBGYN office is annoying in that they are always behind and my appointment takes 3 min once I'm in the room).  I haven't gained any weight although I've had to work harder to lose it.  I haven't gotten a period per se, but I've spotted twice since starting it at my 6 week checkup (baby is almost 6 months old so that's not too bad-keep in mind we EBF so this may have something to do with the lack of periods too).

As for moodswings, I'm pretty hormonal right after getting it.  That week takes some adjusting.  I'm weepy then a super b!tch.  Within a minutes time.

    I'd try it.

  • I think it's worth a shot, pardon the pun.

I decided to go for it so I'd have BC, but hopefully not lose my BFing supply. I would agree with pp that I'm moody just after getting it but then level out a week later. I had bleeding after my first shot, but I don't know if it was from the shot or a resurgence of pp bleeding. I haven't had any since then and I'm about halfway through my second shot cycle.

I would say I've gained weight, but I can't pin it wholly on the shot. I'm sure it isn't helping me lose, though.

  • It was awful - not only did it completely mess up my system (and DH claims I was a different (re: crazy) woman on it), but it was so potent in my system that it took almost 2 yrs to get pregnant (well, of course there's no real way to prove this, however through many dr.s visits and trying to figure out why the heck we couldn't get pregnant when everything looked favorable with both DH and I, the Dr. chalked it up to the fact that I was on the shot (3 cycles) and it was taking a long time to get out of my system).

  • I was on the shot for about 5 years. It was easy, dependable and I never got KU, but it made me fat and depressed.

  • It also totally messed me up. I started breaking out (I'd never done this before), I spotted everyday for MONTHS, I had terrible migraines and I really believe it messed up my fertility for years. I would be very careful before getting it since it stays in your system for so long.

  • I was on it for a while in college and hated it. It made me spot every.single.day, and the gyno said it was because it was messing up my estrogen or something, so she also put me on an estrogen patch. Which granted made the bleeding stop, but either the depo shot or the combination of the two made me gain weight. And having to do the estrogen patch completely defeated the purpose of having a birth control that I didn't have to think about for 3 months.

The only birth control that I truly liked was the nuva ring.

  • Pro: Went, like, a year without a period.

Cons: Made my hair fall out, got horrible, painful acne on my upper back.Sad
