How many u/s did you have?

I am scheduled to have my first appt on Tuesday. I will be 9w5d and was really hoping to see my little peanut :( My doctor said that they only do ultrasounds at 20w or if any problems occur. How many u/s have you ladies had?

Re: How many u/s did you have?

  • I will have more this pregnancy because of my previous loss.

I had one with DD, at 20 weeks.

I would love to be in the "only needing one" category again.

  • I've had 3 so far but I'm high risk.

Non-high risk pregnancies usually only have one or two the entire pregnancy.

  • I had one around 6w for dating purposes & to check viability. It's pretty standard at my provider's office. I also know that my doc does in office US at visits, but I am not sure if I will be getting one or not at my appt Monday. I will have one at my NT scan on Jan. 17 though & then again at 20w for the Anatomy scan. No other guaranteed US that I know of though. I will just be happy if we get to hear baby's HB on Monday.

  • I have actually already had two. I had one at my first appointment when I was on 4 wks 3 days and another one at 6 weeks 3 days. My dr's office has the u/s machine in the rooms and it is just how they do things. I have read that most people get them at 20weeks though.

  • As long as everything stays fine with my pregnancy I will have one at 18-20 weeks.  I could have had one earlier if I was doing the genetic testing but we chose not to.

  • So far with this pregnancy I have only had one at 6 weeks to check for dates. They offer another at about 15 weeks to check for spina bifida(i think) and the fuild in the back of the neck which could mean a possibility of down syndrome. Other than that I have no idea how many more I will have.

With DS I had a bunch done because they need to keep an eye on the placement of my placenta. It was partially covering my cervix. Which I was told is not uncommon and I guess most of the time it fixes itself as you get further along. As in my case.

    Sorry for rambling.

  • I had 2 with my fertility doctor and one so far with my OB (8w2d). I think we will only have 2 more; NT Scan at 12w and when we find out the gender.

  • My office does 3 even for low-risk pregnancies - one at 8 weeks for dating and to confirm viability, one at 18-20 weeks, and then another mid-third-trimester.  However after my loss, they scheduled one at 6 weeks and are following up with another at 7 weeks to hopefully see a slight heartbeat increase.  As much as I love seeing that little blob and making sure everything's alright, I really hope that my 7-week u/s is positive enough that they don't feel any need to check again until 18 weeks.

  • I had one at 6w1d because I had some bleeding but my doctor had one scheduled for 6w5d for dating. This was through my gyno. I'm in the process of being referred to an OB. I don't know what will happen once I'm with the OB.

  • I've had two- but both were because I was in the ER with bleeding. Otherwise, I would only have the NT scan and 20 weeks scan.

  • I've had two already but I've also already have had 2 losses this year.  Only one at 20w is quite common for your first one.

  • I have one on Wed and then we'll probably do the NT scan, which has an u/s, and then the 20 week scan. Hopefully that will be all I need. Last time I had monthly growth u/s because of a giant cyst on my left ovary, which was subsequently removed.
  • I had 8 or 9 with Ella Grace as I was high-risk having 4 previous losses.  I didn't think I would be going to the specialist this time, but the doctor called after I scheduled my initial appt with her to tell me to call the specialist and schedule as well. So I'm assuming we'll see this little one many times.

  • Wow...I guess it's obvious how far into the IF world I've gotten...I had no idea that most pregnancies only have a few u/s through the whole pregnancy. We've had two already one at 6w6d and at 7w5d. I'll have a third this coming tues at 9w3d. These have all been with my RE. Then the following week when I finally "graduate" to my OB, I should have a 4th.

No idea how many I should expect after that...I guess that's a good question to ask!

  • I had an internal one last week. I will have the NT scan during my 12th week and the last ultrasound around my 20th
  • For my first daughter I had 3 done...and for my second daughter who was born five years later I only had 2 done.  So far for my third pregnancy since I am a little over 6 weeks...I had just one to confirm.

  • I had two with DD. One at 20 weeks and one for size at 37 1/2 weeks when I switched to my OB.

  • It is really common to have only one ultrasound at 18-20 weeks. Consider it a good thing that is all you need. That means you are having a healthy pregnancy with no problems.

I know it sucks to read about everyone having early ultrasounds, because who wouldn't want to see their baby?

I had a recent loss so I'll be going in next week for my first u/s, then I hopefully wont have one till 20 weeks.

  • I had one ultasound on Christmas Eve and I have another one scheduled for the end of next week.  I've been bleeding for a month straight and Dr. expected me to miscarry two weeks ago.  Soooo, I think they are just wanting to check and see if I am still chugging along.
  • I've had five so far.  I have one every week.

If I were having a "normal" pregnancy I would have had one around 6-7 weeks to check for a heartbeat, then the NT scan at 11 weeks (I'm 39) and then another around 18 weeks.

I wish I were having a "normal" pregnancy.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

  • I have had 4 losses so I get one every week (weeks, 7 weeks and 8 weeks). If all looks good Thursday I probable won't get an u/s sound until 12 weeks. With my daughter I had my first u/a at 8 weeks, then 10 weeks, 12 weeks and on every 2 weeks.

  • I have my 3rd tomorrow, and I will only be 7w1d.  The reason I've had so many is because I have had a previous loss, and there have been some red flags with this one all ready.

  • My doc does an early US to confirm dates, heartbeat, etc. and then another around 20 weeks. We are still deciding on if we want the NT scan.

  • Thanks! I wasn't sure it was normal practice or not to just be scheduled for one. All of my friends/family had at least 3. I just want to make sure that my lil one is on track and we are still unsure if we are having multiples.

If your doctor has any reason to suspect multiples, they most likely will do an u/s to make sure. And they will be able to make sure your pregnancy is progressing normally without one.

  • With my last pregnancy, I had 5. However, DD was overdue and I was going to the OB every 2 days there at the end, so most of my u/s's were done then to check my fluid levels.

So far this pregnancy, I had my first u/s at 6w6d due to spotting and am scheduled for my second at 12 weeks for my NT scan. I'll have another around 20 weeks for the growth scan and another around 36 weeks.
  • I've had 2 so far and have another one scheduled for Thursday. After that we might start going every 2 weeks. I was high risk with my daughter and am high risk again so I get them all the time :( I also would love to be in the "not needing u/s all the time" group.
