Anybody getting rid of their pet?

Re: Anybody getting rid of their pet?

  • My dog is my child and will be part of our family until her time on earth is over.  I hope that your kids don't act up because It seems like beings are disposable to you.

  • It is disgusting how some people have such a cavalier attitude about dumping (yes, dumping) their animals. I have an autistic son and four dogs. One I have had for almost 9 years and would not be considered 'kid-friendly'. Did I dump him when I found out I was pregnant with my son? ABSOLUTELY FREAKING NOT. It is called training and monitoring. I have also had special needs dogs, including one with severe epilepsy. People give such bull$hit excuses to dump their animals, as if the pet overpopulation is not bad enough to begin with...and people think someone will magically come along and absolve them of their responsibilities to their animals. What kind of a lesson is this to teach your children??? Then people 'rationalize' so they don't have to feel responsible for making the animal someone else's problem...an animal that will be subject to rehoming after rehoming. I have no sympathy for such heartless individuals.

I have fostered dogs, including one that was dumped outside a high-kill shelter who was riddled with cancer. I had him for a month before he died (and he had surgery) but at least he had someone (me, that loved and cared for him)  to be with him when he died. Most of you that dump your animals, well, don't delude yourself. These animals are subject to rehoming after rehoming and eventually end up in a shelter where they are euthanized by strangers.

Oh yeah, and I have a dog that marks. Again, it is called monitoring. I love him and accept him. My collie has severe arthritis and requires expensive medication and monitoring to keep him healthy. They are FAMILY and are treated as such. My son may be delayed but he learns how to LOVE and be COMPASSIONATE for the pets in our household.

If I can have four dogs, and foster, with an autistic son, in a small house, then I don't want to hear the excuses of 'you don't understand'. I also do home inspections and check references of those interested in adopting so I only sympathize with the poor animals who are dumped for stupid reasons ~ because I have seen it first hand.

    Good topic..

We have two cats and I'm not sure what to do. They shed horribly and then the other day someone reminded me about dander!! Also, I love my cats but I don't want them jumping in the babies crib or getting on anything because of the fur,  and not to mention the fact that their feet are in the litterbox etc.

I would hate to give them away but the baby trumps them! I'm going to have to really pray about what to do.

Dander?! Dear God, not the dander!! Do you know what dander is? Dead skin that gets shedded. You know, kind of like how humans and every other mammal shed dead skin? It's everywhere sweetheart. And cat fur isn't laced with cyanide. As far as them stepping in the *gasp* litterbox, cats are notoriously clean and wash their paws pretty much everytime they step out of the box. I can pretty much guarantee their feet are cleaner than yours are.

DH and I got our two cats two years before DS was born, SHOCKINGLY kept them after finding out I was pregnant and guess what -  DS is still alive 2 1/2 years later!

And yes, if there was a fire, of course I would get the baby first. But I would also go back in for the dog. Or I will get the baby and DH will get the dog. But I sure as h*ll will not be running out of the house and letting the dog burn to death. He spends every minute sitting next to me or DH, so even in the middle of the night if there's a fire, he'd be right there with us when we're getting out.

    Amen.

It is one of my biggest fears in life that a fire will break out when I'm not home, and something will happen to my dog. You better believe DH or I (or, I might add, any of our amazing neighbors who also love their animals and who I have seen put themselves in harms way to rescue a dog running across the street) would go back for our girl.

It wouldn't even be a question.

  • I also want to add that it is particularly disgusting that this post could be about an old purse, instead of a living creature...because of the blase way the OP posted about it.

As for the inevitable - you should have thought of that before you brought her home comments: I was 24 when I rescued her from a neglectful situation. Kids were not on my mind, and as there are no children in my family, there was no way to know that she was so aggressive. Her former owners offered no intel here.

When I adopted my pets, my cats 6 years ago and my dog almost 3 years ago, I knew that they would live for 15-20 years, and I also knew that in that time a lot of changes would happen in my life. No, you shouldn't hold off on things waiting for your animals, but know that you will have to adjust things to include them too. Yes, animals are a big commitment, but they aren't that hard. To me they just bring happiness to my life.

If you want a pet for only a few years get a hamster.

Amen Pandi. But they should get a pet rock, not a hamster. Even hamsters need love =)

This is one of my big fears too. Until recently we lived in an apartment where I'm pretty certain none of my neighbors would even notice until their apartment was on fire too. But now that we're in a house I would hope that at a very minimum someone would call the fire department and tell them there is a dog inside. Eventually I'd like to get a dog door so he can go in and out freely so if there were a problem inside hopefully he'd be able to get himself out.

  • Never, she is a part of our family. It is horrible what your cat is doing, perhaps she will get adopted since she is so young. This breaks my heart when people give their animals away.My old manager had 4 different cats in one summer, none of them worked out, sometimes it is the people and not the poor innocent animals. There are a ton of animals in the shelter and the older ones usually get put to sleep. :(
