So I had no idea how much BM I had in the deep freezer until DH told me he could not longer put food in there. Apparently I have 300 ounces and I've been giving O's sitter fresh milk. I should give DC the older milk now right and then just freeze the leftover?
I also have some milk when I wasn't dairy free that I won't be able to use about 50 oz. Does anyone know what I can do with this? I hate to throw it down the drain.
Re: Breastmilk and daycare
I think I remember doing the same. The BM you produced when she was 1 week old is not the same as 3 months old, etc, so I would definitely start rotating your oldest out and start freezing your current. As Caligirl said, just give 1 or 2 bottles of frozen, then use fresh (bottle or BF) the rest of the day. That will help you cycle out some of it, although the little bags are expensive! Check with your DC - some of them let you provide it frozen, and others will require it to be thawed already.
I would mix half and half. We were required to bring it thawed out, in the bottles. If I had a 6oz bag, I'd pour 2oz in each bottle and mix the rest with fresh BM.
The other 50oz - see if you can donate them.
Thanks! Her sitter said she will make the bottles so just provide whatever (frozen or fresh) but I didn't know what to do with my frozen stuff.
Ill try to donate the other 50 oz I have.
I personally never gave frozen milk until much later on when I started having days when he drank more than I pumped. For me the number one purpose of BFing was the antibodies, freezing does damage them so I always gave as much fresh milk as I could.
My initial stash (which was about 300oz) I donated to a family that had just adopted a baby. Cooper was about 3 months old at the time so the milk I had pumped when he was a few weeks old was nutritionally better suited for their newborn. (I just got a Christmas card from them, and he's super cute!)
If you are interested in donating milk there are a number of avenues for that.
After that I never rebuilt quite as big a stash and I've needed to dip into it a number of times.
Unfortunately, the milk she is trying to give away has milk protein in it so it probably wouldn't work for your baby either.
But please do call a lactation consultant. If you are making milk, they can help you with the latch issues and the production issues.
