anyone deal with insomnia?

Ive NEVER had issues falling asleep in my life.  I have ADHD and when Im not medicated, I am up a million times a night, but thats fine with me because I usually fall right back asleep.

The past 2 nights, tho, Ive had a hell of a time falling asleep.  2 nights ago, I tried to go to bed at 10:30 and didnt fall asleep til 2.  Last night, we got home about 1am and I didnt fall asleep til after 5!!!  Both nights, the only way I was able to fall asleep as to take Benedryl.

I do take Adderall XR, but Ive been on it for years (except when pg) and never had this issue.  I had this happen a few months ago for a few days, then I went back to normal.

Anyone have any home remedies or techniques to beating this?  3 hours of sleep is not working for me.

  • Have you tried listening to music? I sometimes keep my shuffle next to my bed and if I can't sleep, I put on my headphones and listen to enya or some other type of soft music. It usually puts me right to sleep! Sorry you are dealing with insomnia :(

  • I don't have chronic insomnia, but a few days before my period, I cannot sleep for the life of me.  Then, the day my period comes, my sleep is back to normal.  I have been on the pill in the past, and this problem went away.  Maybe this is something hormonal for you, too?

I suffer from insomnia from time to time.  I've found the only thing that works for me is Benedryl or Tylenol PM (it has the same medication as Benedryl).  Also when your thinking about sleep & insomnia it's hard to fall asleep.  I hope your insomnia doesn't last long.

  • I've had insomnia for years. When it gets really bad I will take Benadryl or Tylenol PM but only if its been days since I had any decent sleep.

  • I suffered from chronic insomnia for about 10yrs. Finally got professional help from a sleep specialist and he helped me soooo much.  I learned healthy sleep habits and benefited a lot from "sleep deprivation therapy".  I realize that sounds strange, but the basic idea is to make yourself stay awake much later than your normal bedtime.  It works because the less time you spend awake in bed, the less you will associate your bed with wakefulness.  You want to make sure you go to bed when you are really, really sleepy.  Don't just go to bed at 10 because you think that is when you "should" go to bed.  Try staying up a couple hrs past your bedtime.  Also, if you are tossing and turning for more than 1/2 hr, it is important you get up and go to another room, relax, and wait until you feel tired again, then go back to bed.  Msg me if you need more support.  I know how awful it is to have insomnia.

  • I had it when I worked nightshift on my days off.  I took lots of benedryl but that isn't a good long term option.  I would talk to your physician about it if it continues to be a problem.

  • I have been having lots of issues with insomnia lately too. (and also, I was diagnose with ADD at 22, I took Adderall for a couple years and loved it, but I haven't taken it for 4 years since preg with DS 1. I miss it, it helped me alot.)

Check your diet. Really realy try to eat lots of fruits and veggies, it really will help. Especially taking Adderall, which is an appetite suppressant.

A friend suggested Melatonin, but I haven't tried it.

    Good luck!
